L 21/L21-2 - original firehouse - 436 E 36th St -  quarters from 1890-1937  - firehouse and surrounding properties razed for new Lincoln tunnel access

Wrong photo Mack. This is a picture of Engine 21's old house at 216 East 40th Street and the alley on the left is from a Queens-Midtown Tunnel exit.

Marine 9 (also designated Engine 51) had many berths since organized as Engine 51 in 1883.  SI berths along North Shore of Staten Island include St George, Tompkinsville and Stapleton.  Numerous fireboats served including the Firefighter.

Thanks kfd - sorry that I did not mention all the good posts using that system.  Good to immediately look at buildings with fires in progress. Thanks again.

Mack, I would not swear to it, but I don't believe that 49 engine ever used those quarters that are pictured. I think that 49 was disbanded by the time that firehouse was built. It did house the Mask Service Unit, complete with their repair shop within for many years. That building was almost right under the Queensboro bridge near where the former bridge elevator site was.

Combined Engine Company 49 - Blackwell's Island (renamed Welfare Island and then renamed Roosevel Island)

memory master - you might be correct about Engine 49 occupying the firehouse posted.  There is not a lot of information about that company or its quarters.

CEC 49 was formed in 1882 as an FDNY combined engine company with temporary quarters on Blackwell's Island. It remained a combined company and protected the prison, mental facilities and impoverished work shops that were part of Blackwell's Island during that era. A firehouse was built later in 1882.  Pictures of old Engine 49 quarters when FDNY Fire Academy was established in 1960s:

    E_49_fh_2.jpg

    E_49.jpg

    E_49_fh_3.jpg

New quarters for Engine 49 were built in 1949.  The company was then disbanded in 1958.    The FDNY training academy moved to the newly named Welfare Island in the 1960s and the Mask Service Unit occupied the firehouse.  The island transition occurred over the next 30 years.  FDNY training academy then moved to Randalls Island.  SOC currently maintains quarters and facilities on renamed Roosevelt Island.

This picture was specifically labeled as Engine 49's firehouse on the site I found it (sorry I did not save the source):

Engine_49_1.jpg
Picture probably was taken after Eng 49 was disbanded.

The MSU used the same firehouse as depicted above (picture from WNYF 1960s issue):
MSU.png

Mike Boucher's history lists Engine 49's final firehouse being built in 1949.  The pictures about seem to match a firehouse of that date.  Maybe someone else can verify if Eng 49 initially used the same firehouse before being disbanded.

Current SOC quarters on renamed Roosevelt Island: .

When MSU was in that FH before & during the time proby school was on Welfare Island they also housed a fully equipped Pumper that responded to boxes on the island w/2 MSU FFs.....i have not been in the newer SOC FH in a while i know in the '90s they had an equipped Pumper there but it did not routinely respond anymore.
