Of course, Mack, you are absolutely correct but I was referring to long before the War Years. In the decades surrounding 1900, Engine 17 was top dog In the entire city.

Great traditions in Emgine 17. If I am not mistaken it was the busiest company in the city for much of the early 20th century.

"3511", yes Eng 17 was one of the busiest during those very busy years. Eng 17 would team up with Eng 28, Lad 11, Lad 18, and the 4th Battalion in the Lower East Side. Aves A, B, C, and D and everything in between kept those companies right up with the best of them. It was the South Bronx of Manhattan.

You can sense there was an ulterior cost-cutting motive by the "powers that be" when they chose a new E17/L18/Bn4 firehouse site only 2 blocks from Engine 15.

Was Squad 5, when it was running in the Lower East Side, stationed by itself at 55 E. Broadway after moving from Fort Pitt?

I saw the new door the other day...very nice....they also have a very nice large 9-11 mural on the side wall of the FH facing the parking lot.

L4's house also had a separate chief's quarters that ran perpendicular behind the apparatus floor and opened onto the cross street rather than 8th Ave. It was a holdover from the days when the Chiefs and their families actually lived in quarters. Engine 71's,  old house on Park Ave in the Bronx, now an EMS station, has a similar arrangement that used to be the 7th Division's house. Anybody know Of any other old Fire houses Built that way?

The 48 St side entrance for BN*9 opened into the area that is presently the kitchen in the "new"  qtrs.....the old kitchen was there also & the Chiefs app door opened right into it.

Gman, I saw E37 pulling into Qtrs from the Amsterdam Ave side in the late 50's,one of the few firehouses I ever saw like that.

Must've been running with two Ward LaFrances: #1 was a 1952 (#2969) with a ragtop canopy and #2 was a 1954 (#3451) Civil Defense C.D. 41

    - Bn 11 relocated 133 W 99th St (former quarters Bn 12) 1898
    - Bn 11 also relocated to Bronx (L 17) and back to Manhattan (E 76, L 22, E 76)

Engine 26 - 1860 (former volunteer firehouse)
Engine 5  -  1864 (former volunteer firehouse)
Engine 44 - 1881
Engine 47 - 1891
Squad 18 - 1892
Engine 14 - 1895
Engine 33 - 1899 (June 1)
Engine 55 - 1899 (June 6)

SI oldest firehouse is L 79/Bn 22 - 1904 (former volunteer firehouse)
