First due areas

I’d say 151/76 has one of the largest first due areas. Huge chunk of southern SI. L84 as well covering first due areas with both E164 and E168. After that, other that come to mind are 257/170 in Canarsie and 313/164 in Eastern end of QNS. those are all companies that have quite long runs to most parts of their first due area…even longer for other companies 2nd, 3rd due etc.

Add 10/10 and any 1st battalion company for small first due areas. While their areas have multi-story skyscrapers in FiDi, their areas all not expansive. Just due to the geography of lower Manhattan I guess.

E10 area is larger then E4
E10 area is also larger then E55
E7 is probably bigger then E10

I'll throw out E 290 and L 103. Many Manhattan companies still have small response area due to traffic congestion. I also have to wonder about E 36 and E 35, along with E 332 and E 236, you could almost see each others firehouse back then.

E*35 and 36 were practically on the same block.

Back in the days of interchange when we ( 332 ) made a left out of quarters and 236 made a left out of there quarters we would see who could beat each other in especially if the box was on Liberty Ave

What is the likelihood of Eng. 26 getting in first due to over half of their first due district on a weekday 9x6 tour?
They don’t even make it down there block lol it’s just to much traffic E1 and E34 usually beat them

From what my dad told me many many years ago on some of the "class 3" runs on the firehouse block, the rig was pulled onto they apron of quarters (they officially got out of the house for the run) and the officer and back step members ran down the block with the rolled up lengths as the traffic was so bad.

Yeah and E26 really can’t even go against traffic because the traffic is backed up a block already

Back in the day L176 & E232 in the Tin House on Rockaway Ave. were 4 blocks from L123 & E227 on Ralph Ave. and 4 blocks from L120 & E231 on Watkins St. and everybody was doing 5000 runs. And there was plenty of work for everybody, no one got cheated out of it. A time in FDNY history that probably will never be repeated.

always going up and down Pitkin Ave. Nobody knew who was who...lol

Also remember companies get relocated due construction lose boxes & response areas & sometimes don't get them back when they get back to their qtrs... Not on purpose but happens. We had gr8 Cpt when we got sent to 270 and we lost few boxes we were 1st due & he put paperwork in to get them back. Think it's more on computer dispatch not quick enough to be put in data base than anything else but has to be done by our end still. I know i saw ticket we were 2nd due & i knew no way gng happen be 1st due easily by 2-3min cause was our original box.

Smallest 1st due area look at Engine 70 & Ladder 53 as far as the number of boxes. Eng 6 or 26 in Manhattan. Eng 67 has about a 10 block area.
Also Eng 44.

Largest 1st Due area can go to Ladder 87. Also think about Engine 165 & 167 in addition to Lad 85.
In Bklyn - don't forget Eng 290 & Lad 103, 257 & 170. Lad 159 also has a large area to cover. Eng 250 should also have a large area.
In the Bronx - Look at Lad 47. Very large 1st alarm area. Eng 38 & Lad 51 also has a large 1st alarm area. Another sleeper can be 81 & 46. Their 1 alarm area goes from Manhattan to Yonkers, and heads east toward Eng 79 & Lad 37.
In Queens look at Ladders in the 52 & 53 Battalions besides L 142 & L143.

A large 1st or 2nd due respose area was E 164/L 84 pre-1960. They responded to boxes from the most southern part of Tottenville all the way to Great Kills, Fresh Kills, Charleston. Just about the entire South Shore. Their housewatch was surrounded with response boxes, to include many dummy boxes for projected streets which still had not been completed. E 165, 166, 167, 168 L 85, 86, 87 were eventually organized, but 164/84 still has large response areas. E151/L 76, E 165/L 85 have large response areas.
