Fort Apache The Four-One
- Thread starter entropychaser
- Start date
In February 1981 a movie came out based on this NYPD Police Pct called "Fort Apache the Bronx" starring the late Paul Newman.
Note - I was a United States Postal Service Letter Carrier in Westport, Ct from 1970 - 1975 and I delivered to Paul Newman.
I remember having a registered letter that only Paul Newman could sign for.
He signed for it and off I went.
I had no idea who he was.
That is until the movie Fort Apache came out.
Also, I buffed in this area of the Bronx during this time.
What a place it was ! ! !

I can be one mean son of a bitch.
The original 41 precinct was in the building on Webster Avenue that is now the 52nd precinct. Beautiful building both outside and inside. Resembles an old fortress from Webster Avenue. I even got to see the inside, standing before the desk sergeant after a brawl in the Jolly Tinker Pub. (The sergeant threw us all out... Straight out of Hill Street Blues.)
The structure includes what used to be a stable for horses that patrolled from Van Cortlandt Park throughout Bronx Park. The stable later became the quarters of one of the ESU outfits.
The number "41" is carved into the brickwork and was formerly visible above the ornate entrance to the building. It was covered over sometime in the last two decades with the "52" designation. One of the NYPD buffs on here may be able to provide the background on the renumbering of precincts.
