Is there anyone from the Groton area who can explain the emergency services in Groton? I usually can figure this stuff out but I’m stumped. It appears there are 7 fire districts & 2 ambulance services. It looks like all of Groton is covered by one police department. Then there is the U.S. Navy Submarine Base F.D. & The Electric Boat F.D. & The General Dynamics F.D. I am guessing the sub base has Navy police (Master-At-Arms) as well.

I am wondering is there a centralized dispatch, does each fire district do their own fire inspections, are their automatic response plans? (Hypothetical: Fire alarm sounding in Groton Center fire district. Closest stations are (1)Sub-Base FD, (2)Electric Boat FD, and (3)Groton Center FD). Would all three departments respond based on geography/closest stations? Seems mind-boggling!

Dept 4 - Noank FD - 1 station
Dept 5 - Mystic FD - 2 stations (one in Town of Stonington)
Dept 6 - Old Mystic FD - 2 stations (one in Town of Stonington)
Dept 7 - Center Groton FD - 1 station
Dept 8 - Groton Long Point FD - 1 station

Navy Region Mid Atlantic dispatch
US Navy - Navy Region Mid-Atlantic District 6 - Submarine Base FD - 2 stations (23 & 24)

Site dispatch
CT Department of Transportation - Groton New London Airport - 1 station
Pfizer Chemical - industrial FD - 1 station
General Dynamics Electric Boat - industrial FD - 1 station

To your multi-part question - yes to all.

Thank you "fdhistorian" for that excellent rundown.

In addition we have as members here "nfdcanman" who just became the Fire Chief of the General Dynamics Fire Dept., and also "johnd248" who might be able to add to this as he is a member of one of those fire depts mentioned

Town of Groton has two police departments: City of Groton and Groton Town. Pequonnock Bridge FD used to have two stations but they currently operate out of only one. I believe General Dynamics and Electric Boat are one and the same and commonly referred to as Electric Boat FD. All of these departments, other than the industrial and Sub Base, are dispatched out of Groton Fire Alarm. There have been many instances where departments dispatched out of Stonington or Westerly that are much closer to an incident are left out as Groton Fire Alarm takes care of their own.

Both the Mystic and the Old Mystic fire departments have one station each in the towns of Groton and Stonington. Groton units are dispatched from Groton while Stonington is dispatched from Westerly, Rhode Island. The Sub Base FD is dispatched from Virginia.
