Does FDNY have a select group of firefighters that are assined to a marine unit or do they have a squad or something go and operate the marine units cause if they have firefighters assined there it would get really boring with no jobs

Marine units have regularly assigned personnel; they perform water rescues in addition to firefighting.  When going to a known ship fire, they are usually augmented with firefighters from a land company.  Personnel assigned to marine units appear to like it, or they would transfer elsewhere.

In the Marine division there is 2 seperate ranks from firefighter and they are Engineer and Wiper and possibly there's a 3rd rank Pilot. To become a Wiper or Engineer  you first have to become a firefighter then you need to be certified through the US Coast Guard in operating boats. I don't know much about boats and being licensed but I believe basically they have to be certified to operate boats with a fairly large powerplant as opposed to a rowboat with an outboard motor.. Hopefully this makes sense. Firefighters are also assigned to the marine unit but they don't operate any ship components other than the deckguns and firefighting equipment. When there is a fire on a larger ship not at a port a land unit will be assigned to operate either on the fireboat or on the ship on fire.

On 9/11 Marine Battalion Chief Fuentes was one of the firefighters rescued from West Street.  Following the collapse of the towers he was one of the firefighters that transmitted a mayday to Manhattan and was eventually located and rescued.

Not sure if the Marine Battalion still exists though; haven't heard any mention of them despite the large amount of water rescues the marine units have had to handle this summer.

SOC = Division, Such as Division 1, 3, etc
Under SOC you have Battalions just like the rest of the city.
Hazmat Battalion - Hazmat 1, E44, etc
Rescue Battalion - Rescues and Squads
Marine Battalion - Marine units.

You don't hear the Marine Battalion much but they do exist.

On a Marine Company you have, depending on size.
1 Officer and 2 Firefighters
Then you have the Pilot, Wipers and Engineers. All have to be FF's first.

Captain Alfredo Fuentes, who was acting Marine Battalion Chief on 9/11, was extricated from the north tower and eventually recovered from his injuries.  He has since retired from the FDNY and published a book "American By Choice."

Does the marine battalion has a similar vehicle like the other battalion units? Ford Excursion or GMC Sierra?
