New FDNY Tillers

Now that I am able to spend some time on the website after surgery I was able to find a person who had a list of assigned tillers dating back to 1977. So here goes:
Manhattan - 5, 6, 20, 25, 26, 28, 34, & 40
Bronx - 39
Queens - 130, 143, 151, & 173,
Brooklyn - 101, 104, 106, 108, 110, 118, 147, &175
Staten Island - 82 & 83

From memory L27 & 59 were the last Bronx truck's to have a tiller other then L-39.
Yes both Ladders 27 & 59 last operated 1980 seagrave tillers
 
I think I know the answer but does the city consider locations of Firehouses in choosing response and apparatus.
For example E-246=L169 quarters, when I was there all the responses had to go down 11th (the wrong way) since making a left hand turn out of Quarters was not possible. In fact the truck had to take the left hand bay just to get out. One of the worse locations for a Firehouse, blocked by Belt Pkwy north and 12th St overpass on the east. Plus on a small one way street and middle of the block. The newTiller should help. Any other houses that are located as bad.

Not specifically the Location but 229/146's Block backs up with traffic often.

Let's stop for a few minutes & think this out.
1. Prior to 1964 ALL Fdny truck Co's in 1964 were tillers. In '64' Ladder 1 received the first tower ladder.
2. The list that I added to this website was from 1977. So with that in mind, ladders 27 & 59 all ready had
rear mounts. So they lost their tillers before 77.
3. The answer to the question can be found in FAJ's books FDNY ladder apparatus where it list when Tower
Ladders and rear mounts were assigned during the late 60's & prior to 1977.
 
when Ladder 59 was organized in 1972 they had a rear mount and they were quartered with Engine 85 . 59 moved in with 43 Engine in April 1978 and early 1981 received a1980 seagrave tiller . Ladder 27 had a tiller up to 1974 and went back to a tiller in 1981 also

That brings up a good question. Leaving the Tower Ladders out of the equation, should the FDNY remained all tillers?
 
That's exactly what was going on in
Forest Hills Garden back in the day. Most of those side streets off Ascan Ave around Greenway Terr ect are very difficult with a Engine no less a rearmount, but this area had H & L 151 and H & L 143. L 143 is still 2nd due truck with there tiller, of course subject to change in the future...lol

So with the new reality of city streets, particularly those in Manhattan and Brooklyn cores being increasingly subdivided and blocked out for bus/bike lanes, it would seem Tillers are prime for a resurgence no?

It already sounds hard enough for the units with 95ft towers to leave quarters, let alone navigate the streets
 
Just a quick question, back in the day the tiller company did BI on their associated Engine and the Engine Co. rode the truck from quarters. Does this still take place because of difficulties finding parking with a tiller rig?

No. Fire truck can park anywhere lol
 
Start working on getting a tiller now.

Look at the “City of Yes” zoning initiative. This place is going to look like Bombay in 20 years. Total 3rd world population density.

And ironically then, a city like Boston with all its congestion and narrow streets is all rear mounts. BFD brought a tiller from one of the nearby towns for a test to two houses, Ladder 1 @ E8 and Ladder 24 @ E4 and the apparatus would not fit.

Interesting how Baltimore, Philadelphia and DC run TDAs almost exclusively still
