Great group of guys that certainly saw their share of work during those very busy FDNY War Years and into the 80s as well.

Besides "Lt.Q L112", other guys were "jbendick" and "68jk09" from this site.

A former neighbor of mine nicknamed "mufti", I enjoyed visiting talking about those busy years.

I must say, without opening a book, as a buff, I sure learned a lot talking to those guys and watching them work.

My younger Buff years

It was my 21st Birthday and my buddy and I had been celebrating in Manhatten. Around 2-3 AM we made our way over to Eng 82/Lad 31s Qtrs. A book titled; "Report from Eng 82" was about to come out. Of course we were a little "under the weather" but the apparatus doors were open and we walked in. We were surprised to see all the rigs in Qtrs because they were so busy at the time. We got invited in and next thing we know is we were sitting having a great 3 AM dinner meal of Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes etc. Of course we didn"t know anybody there, but they treated us GREAT. This year 2026 the days on the calendar are repeating 1968 ....9-12 was the Saturday we all reported in a suit & tie to 60 Hudson St in lower Manhattan for our Swearing In ceremony (think it was a Western Union auditorium ? ) then first thing on Monday morning 9-14 we were at the old Welfare Island for six weeks......what a great time. .....Prayers for our Classmates no longer walking this Earth !
 
I just read on another site that Chief Bob Manson has passed away. Bob and I used to write back and forth a few years ago, and I always valued our communication. He was a deeply insightful presence here, leaving behind many introspective and memorable posts.
I know he had recently relocated from Long Island to Cortland, NY, a few years back. I'm sure Willy and JK will have more details to share soon.
Rest in peace, Boss. You will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear that.
Chief Bob Manson had been the captain of Engine 82 when the book "Report from Engine Co 82" was written by the late Dennis Smith.

Chief Bob Manson had stopped into Maggie Mays in Bayside Queens were many of us used to get together.
It was right after I started writing "My Younger Buff Years" and I said there Engine 82 was the company I hung out at during the peak of the FDNY War Years.

Bob Manson then called me over to a table and he talked to me for about one hour telling me some stories.
But that was the only time I saw him but he treated me great.

May he rest in peace and thank you Chief to your many years of dedicated service to the people of New York City
