Passing of Jack Wright

Fireman's Hall Museum regretfully announces the passing of Jack Wright, Philadelphia Fire Department Historian and long-time museum volunteer. A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Jack became fascinated by Engine 53 and Ladder 27 responding to alarms in his South Philadelphia neighborhood. This ultimately led him to start photographing. collecting and documenting apparatus and fire history. On October 14, 2007 Jack was named the official Philadelphia Fire Department Historian by Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers. He was the third historian to serve the museum and the only civilian to hold that position. Jack's research has been used by the PFD to evaluate operations and procedures. A contributing editor for Fire Apparatus Journal, Jack was also the co-author of Hike Out, the only written history of the Philadelphia Fire Department. He also authored from Horses to Horsepower, a history of Philadelphia's fire apparatus from 1871-2017. Jack was the ultimate authority on the intricate details of the history of the PFD and he will be greatly missed.

Jack Wright and his friend Oz had a number of stations they would visit. When I was in Division 1 Jack had a number of friends in Squad 47 on the B and they would visit on a regular basis. He was a wealth of information and always a respectful visitor. He was a 2 Streeter from South Philly who could be found on the corner of 2nd & Pierce on New Years Night when the Mummers came down the street. Jack Wright will be remembered for the contributions he made as one of the GREAT FIRE BUFFS of our generation. Rest in Peace JPW25PFD. You will be missed.
