Not at all exclusive to NYC, but who remembers these?

BTW:  What is it?  Hint:  GMan will know.

Today's generations have no idea the great things they missed! Listening to a ball game on an AM transistor radio, not on a cell phone.

Not positive, but I think it's a moistener used to wet labels and stamps before the days of pre-applied glue.

In the basement of many apartment buildings

The drums of crackers .....water ...etc were in the basement of almost all FHs that had been occupied pre '60s .....they were in a chicken wire enclosure.....they remained for many years well into the '70s in some FHs.....the Shelter Sign still remains on some today & from time to time the signs appear on ebay...glad the shelters never had to be used here.

Also happy that the crackers and water never had to be ingested.  I tried one of the crackers once and it was enough to knock off anyone who might have survived the atomic blast.  The water made the cracker taste good.

According to a local NYC radio station, it was recently reported that ALL of those Fallout Shelter Signs will be removed from ALL buildings in NYC over the next year.

I also heard of a couple of firefighters who were looking for a quick 2 am snack a few times and they thought a little milk and those crackers would really hit the spot. Of course they never actually did it. But reading what "manhattan" says, "if they did, it would have been great to watch their reaction".

1960s - NYC fallout shelters:

    - 17,448 properties were identified by the Army Corps. of Engineers to have shelters that could hold 11,703,090 people
    - Supplies were installed for $2.40 a person, and included aspirin, toilet paper and hard candies
    - FDNY firehouses had designated fallout shelters
    - Many signs still remain
