Rescue 5 was organized in 1948 to cover Staten Island. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge was not constructed and would not be constructed and completed until 1964.

Rescue 5 was located from 1948-1962 at Engine 155/Ladder 78, New Brighton. Orders for the operation of Rescue 5 as published in WNYF were:

- Apparatus was a WLF hose wagon which would be converted by members with a covered rear section similar to FDNY apparatus.
- Rescue training was the responsibility of Division 8 (if you took Rescue 5 off SI to train, you also pulled a truck company.
- Rescue 5 was not regularly assigned any response boxes but would be special called to SI fires and emergencies. They typically went to SI all-hands, multiples, and emergencies that required special skills or Rescue equipment.
- Rescue 5 was re-organized in 1984 at Engine 160 on Clove Road.

The color photo of Rescue 5's rig was taken at a Bronx multiple alarmer at St. Ann's Ave. & 150th St. That one block section of E. 150th St. between St. Ann"s & Brook Avenues no longer exists today having been closed off for the Juvenile House of Detention at the Brook Ave. end. Coincidently, the raised aerial in the photo was Ladder 17's 1953 American LaFrance which would be reassigned in 1968 to Ladder 78.

Thanks Gman. A coincidence you picked up - L 17's rig going to L 78 to be used by R 5 members.

What was R5 doing at a Bronx multiple?

Great question. I did not realize it was a multiple alarm fire until Gman pointed that out. Maybe Tom might have some info about that fire,

R 5 operating at a Richmond (SI) multiple 5th alarm in 1949.

L 78 could have responded as 1st or 2nd due truck to fire then transitioned to R 5 with apparatus driven to fire by member left in quarters.
