"Original firehouse (Engine 49) established 1882 was north of the current Motorcade garage. Then moved to new firehouse in 1949 near today's tram station. As result of construction of 36 ave Bridge connecting the island to Long Island city, Engine 49 disbanded September 1958."In what year was the Roosevelt Island firehouse built? Perhaps 1973 or 1974?
Thanks for the help.
Sorry 750 main st"Original firehouse (Engine 49) established 1882 was north of the current Motorcade garage. Then moved to new firehouse in 1949 near today's tram station. As result of construction of 36 ave Bridge connecting the island to Long Island city, Engine 49 disbanded September 1958."
Roosevelt Island historical society archives Volume 2,2018. The only FH on island is SOC building, think 250 or 270 Main Street, Roosevelt Island.
The firehouse by the tram I believe was built way after 1949. (I could be wrong) It housed the Mask Service Unit. The building was opposite the 59th street bridge and the base of the former elevator from the bridge. That building was the Department of Hospitals storehouse. Adjacent to the firehouse was the Dept. of Hospitals vehicle shop and the central laundry facility.
A new firehouse was built on Roosevelt Island in 1981, after 49 was disbanded, potentially for 260, and was never assigned a regular engine or ladder."Original firehouse (Engine 49) established 1882 was north of the current Motorcade garage. Would that be Special Ops Command building now.A new firehouse was built on Roosevelt Island in 1981, after 49 was disbanded, potentially for 260, and was never assigned a regular engine or ladder.
Yes.Would that be Special Ops Command building now.
anytime! Thanks to all for your help, much appreciated.
I was referring to the one down by the Queensboro bridge that MSU was in during the 60's not the SOC house up near where the Training School used to be north of the Welfare Island Bridge. Sorry for any confusion.A new firehouse was built on Roosevelt Island in 1981, after 49 was disbanded, potentially for 260, and was never assigned a regular engine or ladder.
Very true but is firehouse that has specialized members there as well as DC and BC there with specialized rigs there. But in true sense not going on "regular runs" That any engine, ladder , rescue or squad would.Calling the current building a "firehouse" is a misnomer in my opinion. It doesn't contain an engine, ladder, rescue, or squad company.
Is there anywhere else in the city a building called a firehouse that does not have one of those companies?
I'm sure you'd rather have an engine or a ladder company in your local firehouse rather than what's on Roosevelt Island.Very true but is firehouse that has specialized members there as well as DC and BC there with specialized rigs there. For sure brother, city island has one. But you know how our city works.I'm sure you'd rather have an engine or a ladder company in your local firehouse rather than what's on Roosevelt Island.
