hopefully someone can answer these questions...

how much time does a firefighter need to be on the job before they are looked at for joining a SOC company (i.e. Squad or Rescue)?
Which squad is busiest in FDNY? and how many fires did they get last year?

besides rope and haz-mat what other qualifications are needed to join a squad co.

six out of seven squad companies (the exception being Squad 1) respond as engines in the first, second and third due resonse area. Add actual jobs, i.e. 10-75's and stuff, special-calls, and incidents such as haz-mat, high angle rescue incidents, etc. and they are pretty busy.

Most FDNY members assigned to SOC are usually on for a couple of years at least. You won't see any probie walking up to a squad company unless it's probably some kind of sick joke.

SQUAD 1 runs a FIRST DUE area as well as the other Squads. Back in 1978 when Squad 1 was re-organized it was put in the quarters of Engine 269. The people in Park Slope raised Holy Hell with the City to get 269 back. SOOOO FDNY put Sqd 1 there. They run as a 1st Due Engine there - THEN as the Squad in other areas - including Staten Island.

Nothing whatsoever. To transfer to any company either soc or regular unit there's an interview with the company commander (captain) and it's recommended that you bring some goodies in for the brothers of that company as well and try to get to know a few of them before putting you paper in.
