It' always something! First it was stealing copper wiring. Then it was stealing catalytic converters for platinum. Now it's stealing grave markers for bronze.

Scrap bronze sells for around $3 a pound, and around $8.7 billion were sold last year. Drug users are responsible for most of this. Cemeteries are ground zero for this crime. Military veteran's graves usually have bronze plaques, so thieves head there first. It turns out that it's illegal to sell a military marker of any kind. They are government property, and, if found, are required to be returned to the VA National Cemetery Administration. Scrap dealers could be criminally involved.

An example of the scope of the problem is Most Holy Trinity Cemetery on Central Avenue in Brooklyn where 1300 grave markers have been stolen.
