Interesting Historical Note; during the War Years and no-mask policy for the first due engine company, some companies had the "third man" on the line break out the mask from the compartment and mask case. It was a company policy for this member to go directly to the floor below and ascertain the floor layout, then join the line. By gaining knowledge of the floor plan from below, he was able to manuver swiftly to the front of the line, relieve the brothers without a mask and make the final push.
