James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 in Liverpool, England. His father James was a volunteer fireman during the war with the Nation Fire Service. One story circulating was that Paul's father was not present when he was born because he was fighting fires caused by a bombing raid that night. A search of the history of wartime England failed to reveal any bombing raids on that date or for 24 hours before or afterwards. He may have been on duty, but not firefighting.

The search did turn up something interesting. It turned out that Paul's father worked as a machinist for Napier Engineering for the duration of the war. Napier was, of course, a well known manufacturer of large marine and aero engines.

It's last and best known engine was the Napier Deltic- a marvel of engineering. It's most famous use was as the motive power for the pump on the FDNY Super Pumper.
