James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 in Liverpool, England. His father James was a volunteer fireman during the war with the Nation Fire Service. One story circulating was that Paul's father was not present when he was born because he was fighting fires caused by a bombing raid that night. A search of the history of wartime England failed to reveal any bombing raids on that date or for 24 hours before or afterwards. He may have been on duty, but not firefighting.

The search did turn up something interesting. It turned out that Paul's father worked as a machinist for Napier Engineering for the duration of the war. Napier was, of course, a well known manufacturer of large marine and aero engines.

It's last and best known engine was the Napier Deltic- a marvel of engineering. It's most famous use was as the motive power for the pump on the FDNY Super Pumper.

The Napier Deltic prime mover was used in Railroad Locomotives, Ships including Submarines and in the FDNY as the Pump Engine in the trailer of the FDNY old Super Pumper 1. I was trained in how to operate the Super Pumper. in the FDNY because I was a diesel mechanic in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam war. It was very powerful, and light in weight for its high horsepower output, but very noisy.
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.

The British Railways " Deltic "class locomotives ( class 55 ) are extremely popular with six surviving in preservation of the 22 built , occasionally appearing on the main line hauling rail fan trips, the two 1650hp engines perl loco very distinctive sound wise . The prototype loco is also saved in a railway museum.
