"Black Sunday" (January 23, 2005) was one of the deadliest days in FDNY History, resulting in four firefighter deaths and severe injuries to others across two separate, 2-alarm fires in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Six firefighters were forced to jump from a fourth-story window in the Bronx after being trapped by fire in an illegally subdivided building.
  • The Bronx Fire (E. 178th St): Lt. Curtis Meyran and Lt. John Bellew died immediately after jumping from a fourth-floor window. Firefighters Jeff Cool, Eugene Stolowski, Brendan Cawley, and Lt. Joseph DiBernardo suffered life-altering injuries.
  • The Brooklyn Fire (Jerome St): Firefighter Richard T. Sclafani was killed in a separate, 2-alarm blaze in East New York.
  • Long-Term Impact: Lt. Joseph DiBernardo passed away in 2011 due to complications from injuries sustained in the Bronx jump.
