1968 MACK PUMPER AT THE OLD WELFARE ISLAND ROCK....
View attachment 55590
The first of the "covered wagons" OTJ as dubbed by the members as they resembled the old Conestoga wagons that crossed America In the 1800s.

^^^ Not too long after these 1968 Mack Pumpers were purchased by the FDNY the Hose Bed cover frame became more squared off to allow more room for Members on top of the Hose Load both for re packing Hose & or for protection if need be....also a Metal Awning was installed over the Back Step.

The Broome St. firehouse shown in this picture was used as a Police Athletic League site, when I was working in E-17 new Firehouse/Police Pct. on Pitt St. in the Late 1970's to the Mid. 1980's. Captain Bob Rainey FDNUY Engine 26 retired

A good thing about the International as well as the Firebrand Pumpers was instead of two individual Jump Seats on either side of the Motor they had a horizontal long Bench behind the Chauf & Officer allowing FFs to get on or off on either side of the Rig.

The gas cap on the Ward's was on top of the cabinet door on the chauffeurs side of the rig. A large funnel in the shape of a "Z" was used to add fuel. The unlucky member, usually the MPO, had to lift the 5 gallon gas can practically over his head to pour the fuel into the rig. A definite "Wheaties" moment.

Anybody remember the International tractors that were purchased just after World War II? I recall L33 And I think L50 in the Bronx using these to pull ancient wooden aerials.

When i was growing up in Throggs Neck in the 1970s Lad 50 had the wooden Aerial and a FWD tractor. If i remember correctly they got a metal aerial in the late 70s

Back on Siegel St the gasoline pump on the Apparatus floor was an old hand cranked one drawing Gasoline from a Tank encased in concrete in the cellar ....when we got the 1969 ALF it was Diesel so we were issued a 275 Gallon Tank ( just like a home oil tank ) that was placed on the Apparatus floor .....the hand crank on top of & inserted into the Tank required many more turns to the gallon than the old (antique looking) pump .....when we moved to Union Ave in 1971 both Gasoline & Diesel Tanks were buried below ground & the two pumps on the apparatus floor were electric just like a regular modern Gas Station .

When i went to R*2 in 1977 the Rig was the 1967 Mack which was Gasoline & was filled from the same type of old hand cranked pump.....in 1982 when we got the ALF it was Diesel so we were issued a the 275 Tank with the tiny Hand Crank inserted in the top of the Tank....after awhile The Job installed a Diesel Tank in the Cellar with an Electric Pump on the Apparatus Floor.....

In 1985 when we moved to Bergen St ... THERE IT WAS AGAIN ....a 275 Gallon Diesel Tank on the Apparatus Floor complete with the tiny Hand Crank Pump inserted in the top of the Tank.....in 1987 i got Promoted & did not drive anymore so the Hand Crank's were a memory.
