Excellent documentary by John Walsh. It should be shown to every politician and media 'talking head' who want to take away our pensions and benefits and who say we are paid too much and are the reason for America's financial crisis. Does anyone think the two civilians who were trapped in that Manhattan High rise building seen in the video would be alive today if they had to rely on Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity and John Stossel to save them instead of Pat Brown (RIP 9/11/01), Pat Barr, Kevin Shea, Pat O'Keefe (RIP 9/11/01) and Bruce Neuberry???

Well, I think they would be.  That is, if the people you named were NYC firefighters.  But they are not.

They are broadcast personalities.  Should you expect broadcasters to be able to fight fires and execute rescues anymore than you should expect firefighters to practice dentistry?

(I particularly notice that the chair jockeys named are all of the conservative persuasion.  I suppose you would prefer to be rescued by Andrew Cuomo, Chuck Schumer, Anthony Weiner, or Jerrold Nadler?  They would do better?)

Let's keep the politics out of here.

Politics has a TREMENDOUS effect on the FIRE SERVICE & we must keep abreast of who is in our corner & who is not politcian wise.......aside from that i worked w/ a FF who carried an Emergency Dental Kit.....in the kitchen he filled 1 FFs tooth & at  another time he pulled another FFs tooth.

Let's keep the politics out of here.

If the clowns that I mentioned kept their noses out of my business (Being a Firefighter), I would be more than happy to as you say, "keep politics out of here". Unfortunately, these BOOBS have attacked the Police and Fire pension system and questioned why cops and Firefighters are paid at the rate they are, as well as why we get benefits and 20 year retirements. Coming from do nothing, mega rich mouth pieces, I take it as a personal offense to me as well as to all of my Brothers / Friends who died in the line of duty (I worked with ALL of the guys who have 'RIP' next to their names in my post)or had to retire due to crippling injuries or job related illness at a very young age. If you are not or never were on 'the job', then I can understand why you would make the statement that you made. But, now that you know why I made the statement, I expect that you will fully understand why I made it and why "keeping politics out of here" would be an insult to F.D.N.Y. Firefighters.

They want to take out pensions away, and question our job.  But they will then turn around and take money under the table, or make choices that will line their pockets.  I know we dont want to get into this here, but they are as croocked as you can get.

Thanks, 69mets, for setting the record straight.  While I still am uncomfortable with what might otherwise appear to be partisan politics on the board, I think you were completely justified in slapping at those "preachers" who take potshots at the job.  I've spent a little but not too much time listening to them, and never heard those anti-FD remarks.  Had I heard what you heard, I might have said the same thing.

Thank you 69 Mets !!! I'll never understand why people that are disgustingly wealthy & NEVER have to worry about finances complain about a cop or fireman's paycheck & retirement that is nowhere near lucrative or excessive

Quick story. My last day working as a Firefighter was Christmas Day, 2003. I left the firehouse about 5 PM after a few good byes and a few tears. I loved the job, but it was just my time to go. I drove to a relatives home to finish what was left of the Christmas Holiday. When I walked in, I said to my brother in law, "Merry Christmas, how you doing" ? His response was "Well, I'm still working for a living".
At the time, he made twice the money I made. I was 56 and he was 46. Apparently he forgot, that when I was 46 (his age), I was working TWO Jobs.
Maybe instead of being that high priced engineer, he should have studied harder and passed the firefighters exam.

I just finished writing this story on another web site, where they were talking about the Oak Brook, Ill Fire Dept. At a town meeting, they wanted to "fire" a firefighter a month until "They Give In". They also referred to Firefighters as "Street People". I think its been removed from You Tube, but check it out. I'm sure there's something out there on it.

I have some limited issue information about the Oak Brook incident. A resident, lawyer I beleive was upset because all he saw was  rigs in the station. Oak Brook is as "lilly white" as you can get. Most of their responses are for EMS calls. That does not justify the assinine comments made at the town hall meeting. Didn't Shakespere make the comment to "eliminate all the lawyers"? ???

Hmmm ... Doesn't that threat sound suspiciously like that made by a barricaded criminal holding hostages? (ie: "Give me what I want or I'll kill one hostage every hour ...")
