Shield colors

When did the current color version of helmet shields go into effect? For example white over black is an engine, red over black is ladder etc. I was watching Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, and they showed what allegedly is L8 responding in a horse drawn steamer, but the front pieces for 1908 were white numbers over black background. I know movies take liberties with a lot of things but this got me thinking.
 
They got that wrong. The 3rd thing they got wrong is they showed 8 truck as a single house. The 2nd bay came down in 1913. 5 years later.

Thanks. I knew the basics of what colors belonged to what type of unit. Didnt realize the capts were a little different either. I wasn't sure when they adopted the specific colors for the specific units. Just got me thinking when I saw that scene in the movie. But then again 8 truck was shown as an engine and not the truck. And its a movie.
