City Council wants Mayor Mamadummy to add 5th man to 80 more Engine companies

Doesn't seem like a bad idea, 20 current 5 man companies, + the additional 80 they want to bring back. That's slightly over 50% of all Engines with 5FF's.

But EMS getting a raise should seem, and VERY MUCH is, a necessity, is that being brought up during these budget decisions?

Fire deaths are up....thats what's driving this. Politicians catching a little heat when people in their district die. Yes people die everyday waiting for EMS........but that isn't making headlines.

Thank you, how was it determined who would become/stay fifth man companies?

From the 2025 Ops Reference Book:

Prior to 1988, there were 135 five-man companies. Following that year all companies lost the fifth man. In 1996 sixty companies were authorized the fifth man for a ten year period. In agreement with the city, the FDNY established tow sub-groups, each of with would start each tour with five firefighters, one with 11 companies and one with 49. The 1996 contract called for optional reduction to four firefighters in the 49 companies when medical leave reached an average of 7.%% over a 12 month period and a mandatory reduction at 7.6%.

In 2006 the agreement was extended for five years. In 2011 the contract was ended and the city determined that engines would no longer have the fifth man except for the four HMTUs.

In December 2015, the contract that was ratified had five 5-man engines to be added each february 1st through 2019, which brought the total to 24 5-man engines including the HMTUs. There are currently 5 groups of staffing

Thanx did not know there was a 2025 version. I believe there is a typo, my 2023 version, pg 215 lists MN units as: 3-8-9-14-33-35-37-47-53-59-67-69-74-80-84-93.
