I too remember those old municipal green doors to firehouses. And also the ones that slid open.  Those at my local house, E79/L37, were huge. Thick metal, with the old type clouded glass that blocked one from looking in or the men from seeing out. (They eventually cut a small slit of clear glass...

1075k, I believe the extra bay was for Division 9, which had been organized and crammed into 90/41. Can't remember if the deputy ever made it there but wound up at E72.

As a Bronx teenager in the 60's, I went to Freedomland twice. First time with the schoolyard guys, probably summer of '62. We were not impressed,  but then we were a cynical bunch. Palisades Park, Rye Beach Playland or the go-cart track in Soundview, all serious bus rides from our neighborhood...

Lucky, That is one hell of a great piece of information. Not only a part of NYC architectural history but of the City's respect for FF's as well. Might 252 have a photo of that in their quarters? If not, we should find one.

That house for Marine 5/E78 was still standing until a few years ago but gone now. The dock however is still there. It's right before you enter the southbound FDR tunnel under Gracie Mansion. I seem to recall the boat being there well into the 1970"s.

Good points, fdhistorian. Although the house and property on East 125th street dates "only" to 1888, not to the older volunteer days,  that might well be the problem that no heirs to the estate can be found. But as someone who worked in real estate, i know that a clear title is essential to...

Thanks for the backup on E36, mack, and continuing this thread. Two things to notice: 1. The link you provided about a Carribean museum is over 2 years old. Still hasn't happened. 2. The drop off in runs/ workers from 1978 to 1979. Follows another post on this forum on the change in the...

Nfd, I know you are familiar with the Bridgeport,  CT FD. A similar situation arose there on the east side when they built the new firehouse to  co-locatte E8 with E6/L6. I forget all the details but do remember that the city was sued by the real property owner after the house was actually...

Gman, the  house  on 3d  Ave that is today 35/14  was planned as 36/14. As busy as east Harlem was in the 70's, there was no intent to close E 36. In fact, with the disbanding of E91-2, E's 35 and 36 were both more critical to  cover East Harlem. Combining 36 and 14 saved money on utilities...

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

No, memory, it is not. It came down in the late 1970's, not long after L14 moved to its new digs with E35 and E36 vacated to L14 ' s house. As a commuter at the time on MetroNorth, i watched  36's house come down brick by brick. The property today still has no structure on it but is part of an...

I believe what had a greater effect on the reduction in fires was the 1978 change in the welfare laws in NYC under Hizzoner, Ed Koch. Recipients no longer were guaranteed a better apartment, a suite in the Hotel Martinque (or similar hotel), or automatic inclusion on the City Housing Authority...

Notice the 20% drop off in runs from 1978 to '79. Happened all across the FDNY. Anyone guess why?

Great report, Mack. Never heard of that incident And my dad worked in ladder 14 for years. As to the response, Engine 36 was missing; Likely second due. Don't think engine 37 wanders that far East. Maybe it was a typo. G-man will tell the tale. .

Which is not to say that some firehouses did not eventually need replacement. In the Bronx, Engines 48 and 50 were in vintage houses from the 1880s. They had already been rebuilt at least once and could really not accommodate modern apparatus. Engine 68 (just a single bay for both an engine...
