FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Shows where city government was in 1976. In the midst of The War Years, When both firefighters and equipment were being run into the ground, the new fire house was built. The old building still stands, as do many of its contemporaries that remain in service. What was the point? No wonder the...

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Great sample, MacK. Thanks. My uncle, A former battalion chief, Left me his entire set of WNYF's When he passed on. I used to study the runs/workers lists to determine trends. it didn't change much year to year prior to the 1960's except for the brush fire years, that's when you would see...

    snorkels vs tower ladders

Looking at the photos of the multiple alarm in Chicago in the National section, I notice Chicago ladders 39 and 54 using tower ladders. As discussed in another thread, Chicago pioneered the use of snorkels. The FDNY rejected the articulated boom and introduced the straight stick tower ladder a...

    Ward LaFrance rigs

Right again, as always gman. I remember those deck pipes, no wheel and no chrome either. Were'nt they painted red? Those WLF's were barebones; not even a MARS light. But they were fast, loud, and had one hell of a siren, made by Sireno (of Staten Island i think) that was the highest pitch of any...

    Mack R rigs

I used to buff E91, 91-2, and L43 in the late 60's, early 1970's, guest of one of the Irishmen in the house who also owned pubs in the Bronx. (If I remember correctly, a case of Shaffer was the price of admission to quarters.) I was there the day the local parish priest blessed 91-2's new R...

    Ward LaFrance rigs

When the WLF Firebrands went into service in1960 they were nicknamed "The Pagoda" by the firefighters because the cab looked like it had been designed in Chinatown. This was not a popular buy for the men. They felt it a step back in the quality of equipment, as they had with the purchase of the...

L4's house also had a separate chief's quarters that ran perpendicular behind the apparatus floor and opened onto the cross street rather than 8th Ave. It was a holdover from the days when the Chiefs and their families actually lived in quarters. Engine 71's,  old house on Park Ave in the Bronx...

    7-18-77...BUSHWICK MULTIPLE.

There was also a major change In the welfare laws in 1977. One provision of the new law eliminated the automatic relocation (after a fire ) of recipients to government funded alternative housing. Within a year the number of fires dropped precipitously across the City. Go look at the numbers. The...

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Curious...1973.... When the rigs were falling apart.... Everyday quarters were falling into ruin without basic repair... Closing needed second sections....And the firefighters were getting their brains knocked out.... This city spent its money building Palatial new fire houses.
