    VINTAGE FDNY RIG PHOTOS.

You are correct Willy, started with some of the American LaFrance engines in 1982. I noticed E 48 rig when I was in E 88, E 82 had one too. Interesting to note, that rearmount were still be delivered all red, and wasn't until 1984 Tower Ladders picked up the white/ red scheme.

Wow, reading how adept this Jersey Bar is I didn't realize how flawed the halligan bar was, imagine, after all these years...(add sarcasm here).

    Off duty Member makes grabs

Back in L 38 a member, Billy McDaniel made a dog grab after a woman screaming in the street said "her baby" was still inside, of course baby was the dog. But for that whole year he was the toast of the town for the SPCA for all of their events and dinners and received many honors. We dubbed him...

    5/17/24 Bronx 2nd Alarm Box 2617

When I worked EMS way back then, and of course I'm sure things have changed, yet some remain the same. We transported almost 80% of our patients in a stair chair. Not many folks needed to be on a stretcher. Perhaps a simple, less expensive van type vehicle as task force units responding to less...

    5/17/24 Bronx 2nd Alarm Box 2617

That Denver configuration does not compute, you're still loosing two members from the engine, now you have an ineffective engine... The big red machine requires at least 4 members to be an effective firefighting "unit". Perhaps the city should reevaluate and hire more ems people during the day...

    FDNY 6 LODD'S - BRONX 4TH ALARM - 3RD AVENUE COLLAPSE- 4/4/1956

Thank you for that engrossing write up, being a former member of E 88 was particularly interesting for me. Vinny Dunn often writes about his time as a young Lt with E 33 at the 23rd St fire. He arrived at the command post with the Lt from E 18, the Chief randomly selected E 18 and not Vinny to...

    The old Bangor Ladders

Trained on them early on...how to hold the poles, position the poles etc...it was more about reinforcing teamwork as it required 4 members. I can put that ladder up in my sleep, of course with three other sleep buddies....

Busy New Haven Fire Department is hiring

I took the test and was called in 1978 I was #4 on the list, went to NH for finger prints, etc. Next thing Chief tells me he can't hire me, nice man, almost had tears in his eyes. He told me the city's mayor (or someone like that) would not allow anyone from out of state to be hired. He took me...

    NY airport emergencies

I think you are referring to Dave Russell, I worked with him as a FF in L 112, he got promoted and eventually worked at L 32 (maybe E 62) before he retired. (Dave in middle).
