Having some knowledge of FDNY aerials i don't think the bids are for the heavy duty shd100 the present FDNY ladders are all medium duty seagrave ladders, we had 4 heavy duty 110' ladders in the 1990's and they are long gone. Maybe someone can research or find the actual bid and contract and put it on this site. The ladders now are much better than our old cable and drum seagraves that had to lay in or lean on a building. We usually dont flow water from aerials due to the abundance of tower ladders in FDNY and we have not had prepiped waterways on aerials in a long time. We use ladder pipe infrequently and it has to be attached to aerial and is limited in use. It will be interesting to see designs of ferrera for FDNY.
On the list I posted before were some ladder companies that currently run with 1999 thru 2001 Seagrave 100 ft. rearmounts that have had unique or experimental rigs in the past. They were L4**, 30*, 38**, 49**, 132*, & 165**. [(*) = Mack/LTI 106 ft. Bulldog rearmount, (**) = Seagrave 110 Ft. HD rearmount] Also note that between 1986 and 1988 Ladders: 19, 24, 32, 42, 81, 113, 123, 137, 154, 156 and 169 were the first rearmounts delivered with white cab roofs and a new type of automatic transmission.

Why wouldn't FDNY contract with Seagrave ?  Or were they excluded from the bid process ?

I don't know for sure but I would assume that Ferrara was able to meet the specifications and submitted a lower price.  I would also assume that Seagrave submitted a bid but lost out because of price.  This is what happens if the specifications are not written around one piece of equipment but instead are written for the department's needs.  It's something that's very seldom happens in the fire service and maybe good or bad depending on your opinion.

Don't know if there's any truth to it, but I heard a rumor that Seagrave missed the bid deadline.

"Redlight" is the userid of one of the members here:

He is an exceptionally reliable source for all things FDNY.

The September issue of the Fire Bell Club's "News & Notes" states the following:
"Delivery is pending on 20 100-foot Ferrara rear-mount aerials with Smeal ladders..."

So, has the contract actually been awarded or are we all still guessing?

The contract has been awarded for twenty Ferrara four-section 100-foot rearmount aerials.

The "News & Notes" contained an error of omission, and should have read "...Smeal-type ladders."

This photo is probably closer to what the FDNY version will be like (i.e. no pump):

or perhaps this one:

Both pix are from the Ferrara site.

I'm almost sure that the rig on the 3rd photo is what the new FDNY rearmounts are going to look like:      http://www.ferrarafire.com/FerraraCustom/Chassis/Specialty/LowProAerial.html    Look at Indianapolis, In. that has a new Ferrara 77 ft. rearmount with a single set of jacks and a short turning radius at Station 30:  http://www.indianafiretrucks.com/pages/marion/ifd/30.html  Expect FDNY to get something like this with a 100 Ft. aerial and tandem axles.

These 2 pics are the same exact truck, just the 2nd pic is prior to striping and lettering. This is a new LP 102' RM Ladder from the Elmont Fire Dept, which is right over the Queens/Nassau Border
