What does ABC means next to B-41?

So what are the ABC roles at a fire? Or in general? I've seen several large fires where chiefs were special called and say fc made the statement of make sure there not ABC.

ABCs normally have the same roles as a Battalion Chief would, if FC made a statement such as you mentioned it could be because he was going to be assigned to a special duty that needed additional training. Something such as foam operations, roof operations, etc. I've never heard this happen very often because somebody would be an ABC is normally (possibly all the time I'm not quite sure) a captain so they would have considerable experience in most operations.

I can see that. I remember seeing it in several multi alarm fires fc special called say 2 chiefs and added the make sure there not ABC. I've seen it also where say B39 and B51 are responding to a fire, with say the 39 as an ABC and the 51 will take command even though they are 2nd due. Which made me think a little about it. One of them though was the major foam ops fire in Staten Island about a year ago or so.

If there’s isn’t a captain available who is on the promotional list, I’ve seen where the take the most senior captain.
I was a newly promoted Capt. in the Bronx. This was my second tour and I get a call from the Division and they tell me that I'm the ABC tomorrow on my second day tour. I remind the Aide of my seniority and he tells me that they are aware and that I'm the only Captain available. Thanks to my prayers, all goes well.

You are correct Bulldog about certain roles that an ABC can’t fill. The one I am aware of is safety chief (not the Safety Battalion), but the BC chief assigned to safety before the arrival of the SB. All battalion chiefs go through training on the safety chief’s operations, which I don’t believe captains receive.

On a 10-66 (missing, lost, trapped FF), ABC’s are not assigned the positions of FAST Group Supervisor or FAST FF Locator Officer. However, as with all things in the fire service, sometimes out of necessity, an ABC, may assume the role/s until the arrival of a battalion chief.

I was a fairly new CPT & the DV called me & said "tomorrow your gonna be a ABC" I said I am new ...they said " you have 26 yrs.. your it" ....the next day I am sitting in the BN office talking to the BN*FF & a phone alarm is announced over the Dept Radio & the BN*FF says if thats a job we will be the AH Chief & with that he looks out the window & says " oh boy that looks like a job" ...I figure he's kidding but at the same time ...10-75...then the 1st Due gives "Second Alarm ..Fire in 2 bldgs"....now we get in the BN Rig & I hear the 1st Due BN give " we will be delayed from a Drill" .....so we wind up 1st BC......on a different note in more recent times the policy now is that when an ABC is working & 1st Due he is to turn a routine job over to the next arriving regular BC.....my thought is if the ABC can be the Chief for the tour but is not qualified to run a routine job if one occurs then don't have an ABC in the first place.....hire a regular BC to fill the opening.

That’s a great story chief! As for an ABC being relieved by another BC, your point is well taken!

Question for you: Do they offer over-time to battalion chiefs before filling with a captain? Where I worked, if the lieutenant was off, by contract they had to offer it to the lieutenants. If no lieutenant took it, then a sergeant would be bumped up to acting lieutenant for the shift

IN FDNY. I believe they can offer Comp Time. No O/T for BC's.
