I have to sat thats some ugly lookng smoke pushing out of there.
2 1/2 - Anything larger is a supply line.So have they used the new "super pumper" on anything ?.Hey Capt what size mobile hand lines does FDNY use other than 1 3/4. I can't tell if there mobile 2" or 2 1/2"
I'm no firefighter, just a buff. The fact that this was purchased, toook 2-3 years to get in service ,then sit is a disservice. This isn't some prized 57 Chevy. It's almost them saying we don't have a real use for it.I think the higher ups want this to failWhy is this not a 6th or even 7th Alarm? Where is the "New" Super Pumper? Holding off actually a fire going above a 5th Alarm is bad because it causes the statistics to be wrong. Inaccurate statistics can cause FDNY unit to be disbanded. Once again if the "New" Super Pumper is not for fire such as this what is it for? I just don't know what the FDNY Command staff is thinking. Someday this lack of truth will come back to haunt the "Let's not let this go above a 5th" thinking. I know the dispatch system is now computer generated but that is a programming decision not truly what is best for the FDNY and its members. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
And you need to be near the water to supply that kind of water. The hydrants are definitely not supplying that. Like you say, that rig is primarily for foam/hazmat situations. How many times must it be explained that the super pumper is essentially a HAZMAT/foam resource and not a necessarily a "big fire" resource in the same way the previous version was? Fine to say it was a waste of money or whatever but do not act surprised that it hasn't been assigned to every 5th alarm. The department set out clear protocols on when it will be called (largely for foam jobs) and furthermore when you look at the specs, it is a simple 5000GPM industrial foam engine - in the day of 2000gpm front-line engines and 50,000gpm fire boats it will not ever be primarily used as a "big water" resource. This has been explained numerous times on this site.
it would still be nice to see the poor thing get used alreadyHow many times must it be explained that the super pumper is essentially a HAZMAT/foam resource and not a necessarily a "big fire" resource in the same way the previous version was? And the current super pumper was purchased with federal grant money, so downtown dosent care about justification numbers. It’s just another foam resource. As explained by HFN. Designating it as super pumper was a big mistake. Should have designated it something else. Eg. Foam 1, Mega Foam, HydroChem 1, Hi Volume 1, or even reuse the old Maxiwater designation. How many times must it be explained that the super pumper is essentially a HAZMAT/foam resource and not a necessarily a "big fire" resource in the same way the previous version was? Yes its just you. Also is it me or did they take a long time attacking this fire?
Keep in mind, we were not there. Also keep in mind that the companies were operating for some time before the start of the videos that were provided on this site. It is quite common to begin an interior attack only to discover one or more of dozens or more conditions which dictate the switch to a defensive strategy. That takes a little time to set up. Pair up engines to tower ladders, stretch 3.5”, position Tower Ladders and make sure all members are off the roof and withdrawn from the interior. To me it looked well choreographed. Towards the latter part of the video it is impressive to see the well developed fire streams and amount of GPM being applied. (4 TL, 3 multiversals, and multiple hand lines ). I hope in the near future that the job places a non oscillating Blitz Fire nozzle on each engine similar to the planned addition of cockloft nozzles to all engines. The Blitzfire is a nice appliance that fits between the 2-1/2” line and the multiversal. And just as easy to maneuver and move as a 2-1/2” (nozzle closed while moving) with flows of 350-500 GPM. Once again some excellent videos provided by several of the regular videographers. Thank you gentlemen for bringing the fireground into our living rooms. Stay safe. Happy HolidaysYes it’s just you.
Yes, it did respond to that. I don't think it operated at the fire though.I may be wrong on this but I believe it responded to the fifth alarm at the city garage while back. Do not know if it worked that incident.
