3/27/26 Bronx 3rd Alarm 10-66 Box 3514

That is what happened at the fire in 80/23s quarters back in 2008. A space heater was malfunctioning and smoldering up on the second or third floor (not enough heat in the firehouse). The members were all down in the kitchen. When they opened the doors to respond that blast of air ignited the entire third floor. The units were responding and had no idea what was going on back at the ranch.
The firehouse was eventually rebuilt and 80/23 wound up with what was basically a whole new firehouse.

The way I was told was that one of the companies was out. The heater was already malfunctioning upstairs but the remaining members were all downstairs in the kitchen so they had no idea. When they went out a while later, opening the bay doors created the draft that really ignited the fire.

I visited the house within 72 hours of the incident and that was what was explained to me by the engineers on site and later confirmed by friends of mine in the house.

That's what I was told at the time. Stories get jumbled up (purposely or not) so you may have a better knowledge of what happened and if so I will defer to you.

The housewatch in those quarters has been there forever. Of course when I was a kid there was no enclosure. It was just a a raised platform, desk, wooden chair, blackboard and bells, with a railing around it. And a radiator to try and keep warm in the winter.

Long ago memory... Keeping score for some game with chalk on that spot between the apparatus door and the visitor's door... Nothing malicious, just kids being kids... When we finally got bored one of the men appeared with a pail of water and brush and told us to clean the bricks. Just one of those moments that sticks in your brain forever.

It appears to be a spare due to the flip numbers on da door but it looks like da Ladder 37 Truck sign on the side of da aerial. Do they now move that sign when in a spare?
*da flip numbers* - missed one, fixed it for ya!
