Ebinger bakery building, I assume the old loading dock area. Anyone who grew up in Brooklyn knew Ebinger bakery, had stores throughout the borough. Blackout cake was the best, brings back memories and now I’m hungry.

As Mack knows ( his father was in E 248 and B 41), there was always a supply of Ebingers on the kitchen table at 2261 Church Avenue. It stopped when folks became weight conscious; the ultimate downfall of the bakery, Had about 100 retail shops all served by the one bakery on Bedford between Snyder and Albemarle. Had a day old store on Bedford, The cake, rolls, pies, etc stopped just before they moved to Snyder Avenue. In my family, due to the Cold War. we called the infamous Blackout cake "Fallout cake".

Ebingers was the best. Our whole family rejoiced when they opened a store in Rockville Centre. Then we didn't have to depend on our Brooklyn cousins for Blackout cake . . . which they only brought at holidays.

In the small world department, I worked at the First National City Bank at Flatbush and Church. The Treasurer of Ebinger's came in one day to obtain a loan for the business. He had a heart attack and collapsed at the manager's desk. Batt. 41 responded with their resuscitator and a FF from E 248. It was too late for the poor man.
