In the days before the radios and the StarFire CADd, boxes in the Northern and eastern parts of the Bronx were were assigned a 2 and 2 response. For 3632,

E 62 38
L 32 51

On the transmission of a 7-5 (All hands working) a third engine was assigned (63 here). A second alarm brought

79 97 90
37 39

This was a holdover policy from the days of the horses, when 3d due units were not assigned beyond a distance of 1.4 miles. That was considered beyond a healthy range for the horses
It not only tired them out, but also kept them out of quarters for too long.

I believe this applied to the outer parts of the other boroughs as well.
