Great rundown. Long run for E 324/ Sat. 4. Could Sat. 5 from SI be closer? Perhaps they don't leave the island.
Doubt you’ll really ever see them pull stuff from SI. Anytime there’s an all hands or greater SI needs relocaters from BK or further…

3 block run for 318/166. This was a busy box during War Years - a lot of working fires, MFAs, trash, ADVs, muggings.

1940s 2811 Mermaid Avenue was a barber shop.

2811 Mermaid 1940s.jpg

1980s - Store vacant -apartments above store occupied - building to left gone.

This is what Mermaid Avenue looked like in 1973:

First due companies E318/L166 prior turn out to nearby box:

Awesome historical photos, thanks Mack. Very cool to see the change in Coney Island. One thing that seems to have remained over the years is the Sea Gate area and all their PDs. Also, notice the increase in NYCHA complex and buildings between 1951 and 1996 during the Robert Moses era. Seems that smaller structures like PDs were knocked down where those complexs stand today. CI also known for its abundance of high-rises and even duplex apartments - necessary info on the CIDS for companies like 318/166 as it’s their first due.

Since the last photo from 2012 more new-construction has been built there including a new two-tower high-rise MD on the ocean at West 36 street called Ocean Drive. There was a job there like 2 weeks ago on the balcony.

Fantastic set of period photos. I lived across from the 245/326/161/43rd in the Luna Park Houses and was thrilled when the fireman ran to catch up to the engines and jump on board the moving trucks like acrobatic subway strap hangers. Also the view from behind the articulated L.161 as it swung east or west at the top of West 8th. and Surf Ave. and then straightened itself.
E.326 lasted till the 1968 demo and I saw Mayor Lindsay at the opening of the current 60thPD/245/161 about 1971. E.244 did not last past this time frame (1971), I believe.

Do you have any photos of the April 28, 1963---- 8-Alarmer, that you can post? [ W.19th-W.21 from the Boards to both sides of Surf Ave.] Thanks.

The CIDS indicated Steel Trusses supporting the floors and the roof. It is an advanced fire, thus the multiple alarms. Why are the members operating on the roof. You can’t/should not cut the roof. That could trigger a collapse. Don’t think this is a good idea...

Probably mentioned before but E 248 had to swap their 1959 Mack for E 244's American LaFrance warhorse. The powers that were decided that E 244 needed a covered cab rig due to the neighborhood. I rode that ALF and we were happy when E 244 was disbanded and we got the Mack back.

Maybe the truss didn’t extend to the area of the setback where the fire was located.
Also not sure if area was cut or not.

Didnt seem to be advanced - just stubborn. To find and to apply water to.

Was going to mention that too, difficult to find fire. Division 8 asked for the extra engine and truck when BK dispatch notified them the incident duration was 20 minutes and the fire was still being looked for. A lot of stock in a hard to reach area probably added to this. Nice positioning by L166 in the rear parking lot with the stick up to the setback roof while E318 took the front.

That 8 Alarm fire destroyed Ravenhall pool, pictured above. I was 12 years old at the time and my father, who was retired from the job, took me there to buff it that night. The next day I rode down there on my bike and saw the total destruction.

Correction: I referred to E 244's old rig as an American La France; it was a Ward La France, I believe
