In regard to post 930 above ^^^^^^^^^Post by ladder2
from the 1982 Medal Day Book

EDITH GOLDMAN MEDAL
Awarded to
Firefighter 1st Grade JOHN J. MORAN
Engine Company 34

John Moran came up out of the subway on August 31, 1981, and walked through the Port Authority Bus Terminal to get to 9th Avenue. As he exited the terminal, a late summer breeze swirled across Manhattan's 9th Avenue, driving discarded newspapers before it, flattening early morning shoppers against the red dingy Old Law tenements. It was 8:04 A.M. and John Moran, a firefighter assigned to Engine Company 34, was on his way to the 38th Street firehouse for a day tour (9 A.M. to 6 P.M.). He stood on the comer of 9th Ave and 41st St and waited for the traffic light to change.

Suddenly, like a house of cards tumbling, a building under renovation, at 569 9th Ave began to crumble. A tremendous roar and then a collapse that unleashed a falling fury of bricks, mortar and heavy timbers. Moran activated Box 765 as the Fire Communications Center was deluged with phone calls. The firefighter raced to the collapse and dug out a civilian who was trapped in front of Exposure Number 2, (building to the left of the collapse) that address being 567 9th Ave.-Both the exposure and the collapsed building were 4-story non-fireproof Old-Law tenements with commercial occupancies on the first-floor.

A dry cleaning establishment occupied the first-floor premises at 567 9th Ave. Seven people were trapped inside as the bricks and mortar continued to drop. The fire escape from the collapsed building, Number 569, had fallen in front of the cleaners and blocked any egress. Add to this, a strong odor of natural gas drifting through the air. Obviously, gas lines had broken during the initial collapse. Another collapse and a possible explosion were real dangers. As the hail of debris continued to rain down, John Moran crawled through it and underneath the downed fire escape to reach the employees and customers in the store. Gaining command of the situation, Moran waited for things to clear. He then led the seven trapped people to safety.

Ironically enough, Moran's own unit, Engine 34, came rolling in as the first unit on the scene. The firefighter quickly apprised the officer, Lt John McGovern, of conditions and rescue operations commenced in order to reach other people who were trapped on the upper floors. As the other FDNY units rolled in, portable ladders and buckets from the tower ladders went up and down searching and removing people and workmen from the upper floors. Unfortunately, one occupant was caught in the main collapse and succumbed. Five other people were injured and removed to St. Clare's Hospital and another six required first aid for cuts and bruises.

BC William Grimes had this to say in his official report. "The remaining structural components, the serious degree of collapse and the bulging walls in Exposure 2 all were mute testimony to the life threatening situation encountered by Firefighter John J. Moran #2. By placing himself in immediate jeopardy, he successfully extricated 8 people from a very perilous situation. He continued to operate after the arrival of units and his knowledge of conditions aided immeasurably in the overall strategy that was implemented."

Operating alone, before the arrival of incoming FDNY units, FF Moran crawled through the collapse to reach the trapped people. John J. Moran #2, of Engine 34, is truly a credit to the Fire Department. His cool professionalism under fire and his heroic manner are great testaments indeed to the commitment and long tradition of New York's Bravest.
