Islip Fire Department

Dec 16

With a profound sense of loss the Islip Fire Department announces that 28 year veteran and Ex-Chief William P. Moon II has suffered a critical injury, sustained in a training evolution while on duty with FDNY Rescue 2, and is not expected to survive.

Billy Moon served the Islip Fire Department with distinction, often referred to as a Firefighter’s Firefighter, and according to Chief of Department Alden Schroeder, “was the heart and soul of the Department, a dedicated and exceptional firefighter, and a mentor to many whose impact will be missed.”

Billy rose through the Chairs from 2002-2006, serving as Captain of Engine Company 1 in 2007-2008 and as Chief of Department in 2016 and 2017.
In addition to his firefighting duties, Billy was a long time and accomplished member of the Department’s Wolves Drill Team, Marching Band, and Hockey Team. As a member of the Historical Committee, Billy had a large collection of photos, and would often showcase these photos in the firehouse as lasting examples of the pride in brotherhood.

Whether volunteer or career Billy always exhibited tremendous pride in improving his chosen craft.

Billy was known for being the center of attention at every social gathering, however when the alarm bells went off, he demanded nothing less than excellence and preparedness. An example of leadership proudly emulated by younger generations of Islip firefighters. Whether, volunteer or career he was always a true professional.

His last act of heroism is to participate in the gift of life program where he and his family have chosen to donate his organs so that others may live.
He is survived by his parents, his brother and fellow Islip firefighter Robbie, sister Chrissy, his wife Kristina and his 2 young children.
Wake and funeral services to be announced at a later date.

May Firefighter Moon continue to Rest in Peace, may his family be comforted and may his brothers and sisters on the job also be comforted.
