Chief - I just noticed that the 60 Battalion also worked last tour with 35 Battalion at Seigel Street.

L 108 Last Tour in 112 Seigel St_.jpg

The 60 Battalion was formed in 1970 at Engine 218 but it operated as an additional battalion to share the workload in the busiest Brooklyn battalions. It was assigned to different locations as an operational BC and had no administrative companies assigned. As best I remember, it was a good assignment for new BCs to pick up fire duty experience rapidly in busy battalions. The 60th was disbanded in 1975.

My father liked working the 60 when he made BC. He would say - lots of fires, good firehouses, no paperwork.

Siegel Street (once called Marshall Street) in named for Major General Franz Siegel (1824-1902) of the Civil War Union Army. The street was opened in 1852 from Broadway to Bushwick. Siegel had been born in Germany, came to this country and played an important role in engaging the sympathies of German immigrants to the Union cause. His military skill helped save St. Louis from the Confederates. Possibly some Germans from Williamsburg served under him and honored him with the street. He was later a customs agent and an editor of the “New York Monthly.” A commemorative statue was erected in 1901 on Riverside Drive in New York City.

Engine 239 (continued)

395 4th Avenue firehouse modernization 2008:

ENGINE COMPANY 239

Modernization and expansion of a three story, 7,000 sf brick and limestone 1895 firehouse along 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
Typical of the firehouses serving these low-to-medium density residential neighborhoods, the building houses an apparatus room for the fire engines, an office, a dormitory, kitchen, and lounge area. The interior spaces were modernized and expanded for the new program requirements of the engine company. The modern extension at the back of the building with a brie-soleil and large glass openings integrate the exterior courtyard to become part of the firehouse. Daylight was introduced through the new skylights over the main stairway, and the dining area enhancing the quality interior workspaces. The front façade was altered to accommodate the size of the new fire engines.
