FLATBUSH VOLUNTEER ERA

Flatbush Fire Department companies protected the town and city of Flatbush before it became part of the City of Brooklyn in 1894 and then from 1894 to1896 when the paid Brooklyn Fire Department expanded to cover the Flatbush area. The Flatbush Fire Department was composed of the following companies:

Farmers Ladder 2
Malbone Hose 5
Melrose Hose 2
Prospect Ladder 3
Washington Engine 1
Washington Ladder 1
Windsor Terrace 3
Woodbine Hose 4

ENGINE 310 QUAD



Engine 310 operated a 1951 Ward LaFrance Quad in the 1950s prior to organization of Ladder 174 in 1966. Single engine companies in vicinity included: Engine 310, Engine 283, Engine248, Engine 257, Engine 227, Engine 323.

LADDER 174

Ladder 174 was organized in 1966 with a 1955 Four Wheel Drive 75 foot wooden aerial ladder. These were last wooden aerial ladders purchased by FDNY.

LAD*174 was organized in April 1966 mostly using Members from the then disbanded SQ*8 from Lower Manhattan .....the placement was primarily to relieve "heat" from LAD*120 & a few surrounding LADs North & North East as the FDNY War Years were taking off...years later I had many good job's with 310/174 as a FF in R*2 & also as a Cov LT in DV*15 on "Snyder Island"....always a Class Place.
