Hero FDNY captain rescues badly-burned grandpa from burning Queens building

By BEN CHAPMAN, JOE KEMP and LARRY MCSHANE
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
DEC 10, 2011 AT 4:50 PM

CAPT.jpg
Capt. Thomas Ray, normally stationed at Ladder 173, was on duty at Engine 315 Friday night, Dec. 9, 2011 when he responded to a call in Flushing where he performed a dramatic rescue from a blaze. (Aaron Showalter for New York Daily News)

A badly-burned Queens grandfather was pulled from his smoke-choked bedroom early Saturday after his desperate son screamed at firefighters to rescue the trapped man.

"My father! My father!" howled Patrick Bryan, 32, as the FDNY reached his burning Flushing apartment at 2:12 a.m.

Bryan, his wife and their 5-year-old daughter escaped from the two-story apartment building — but 64-year-old Patrick James Rohan was lying unconscious in a rear bedroom.

"We knew somebody was in there," said FDNY Capt. Thomas Ray, who was working an overtime shift. "When we got to the corner, there was somebody waving us down. A group of people were frantically yelling."

Ray, working with Engine 315, went into the building with firefighters from Ladder 125 — only to find the apartment's metal front door locked.

Firefighters smashed their way inside, with Ray heading down a smoke-filled hallway as his colleagues poured water on the kitchen fire.

"When I got in the bedroom, I found the body," said Ray, 51, a 26-year fire veteran. "I started to move him."

With the help of his fellow smoke-eaters, Ray brought Rohan to safety. The older man was in serious condition at New York Hospital Queens with burns on both arms.

His daughter-in-law was treated at the same facility, while his granddaughter was taken to Cornell Medical Center. Patrick Bryan was treated at the scene.

"I saw them take someone out on a stretcher," said neighbor Rose Abramova, who watched the rescue from her kitchen window. "I got scared. It's very sad."

FDNY Firefighters Rescue Eight From Burning Homes

Teamwork, quick thinking and bravery are being cited for a heroic rescue by several FDNY officers and firefighters who saved eight people from an early morning structure fire.

Apr 2nd, 2013

Firefighters with FDNY saved eight people from a fire in a two-story, two-family home in Queens early Monday morning.

According to a news release from FDNY, firefighters were summoned to the scene of the structure fire on 65th Avenue at 1:45 a.m. There were reports of people hanging out windows waiting to be rescued. Through teamwork, quick thinking and outright bravery, firefighters saved everyone.

“We all worked together perfectly,” Capt. Robert Reinhardt, Ladder 152, said. “It’s like baseball or football, everyone has their position and did what they had to do.”

Reinhardt said he and his team were met by the mother on the stoop of the house saying her children were inside. Other firefighters scrambled to tag a hydrant, finding the closest one blocked by a vehicle. They hooked up to one further from the home and established water supply.

Without pausing to think, firefighters went inside and up the stairs to the kitchen and were met by a large amount of fire and smoke. They knew there were people trapped in the back, so they crawled through the living room and down the hallway – essentially around the fire – to reach the victims in the back bedrooms.

Meanwhile, the members of Ladder 125 saw the victims hanging out of windows in the back of the house.

“Every window you could see had at least two people yelling for help with smoke coming out over their heads,” Lt. Michael Heffernan said. “They were panicking.”

Firefighter Sal Mirra put up a portable ladder to reach victims, and pulled two from one of the second floor windows.

Firefighters from Ladder 125 also put up their portable ladders, even using one ladder they found in the yard, to quickly reach the other victims.

Firefighter Robert Marolla, who normally has responsibilities inside, was held outside the residence for a short time to help remove victims through the windows. He rescued two.

Inside, Capt. Reinhardt reached a bedroom and found four semi-conscious and unconscious victims. Since Engine 299 was getting water on the fire, they knew it would be safe to take victims out the way they came in, so he and Firefighter Richard Kuntzler carried a 14-year-old boy out the front entrance.

At that time, Firefighter Noel Curry, who had come in through a window along with Firefighter Louis Nicolosi, helped get the father out.

The two other victims were taken out through the window with help by firefighters Nicolosi and Daniel Fanto.

They believe those victims had been trapped because bunk beds were blocking the window in that bedroom.

The victims were assisted and taken to local hospitals by various EMS professionals, including Deputy Chief John Nevins, Lt. William O’Neill, Lt. Alice Lomino, and EMTs William Portella, Kimberley Barba, Wayne Aberg, Gary Hackett, Alexander Horn and Joseph Siciliano.

“Everyone’s training kicked in and it worked out well,” Capt. Reinhardt said. “I’ve been doing this 23 years and this is the first time a rescue has worked out like this for me – that we were able to help so many people.”

Lt. Heffernan agreed, noting “When people are screaming saying they’ll jump, you need to just revert to your training. I just hope everyone is alright.”

Those involved with the rescue include Firefighters from Ladder 152 (Capt. Reinhardt and Firefighters Thomas Strong, Sal Mirra, Daniel Rotanz, Daniel Fanto and Richard Kuntzler), Ladder 125 (Lt. Michael Heffernan, and Firefighters Patrick Lavin, Noel Curry, Louis Nicolosi, Ryan Fassino and Robert Marolla), Engine 299 (Lt. Michael Ryan, and Firefighters Michael Lanzellotto, Michael Demeo, Matthew Jordan and Dominick Nuzzi) and Engine 315 (Lt. Thomas Lane, and Firefighters Jeffrey Dobry, Michael Lawrie, John Gayson and Tom Ruesing). All arrived within minutes of the initial call.

“This was the lifeline of the neighborhood — now where are you going to go? asked longtime Kew Gardens Hills resident Jimmy J. F. as he stared at the burned-out block of mom-and-pop stores.

A five-alarm fire destroyed 14 businesses in Kew Gardens Hills right before the new year, FDNY officials said, as the flames tore through an entire block on Vleigh Place and gutted the neighborhood’s central shopping strip.

The blaze began at 6:30 p.m. last Friday and was not brought under control until midnight, Nearly 200 firefighters were on the scene, with four of them sustaining minor injuries, FDNY said. No civilians were injured in the fire, officials said.

The cause of the inferno was still under investigation, but officials said they did not consider the fire suspicious.

The raging flames obliterated the block of small businesses, including a law office, a pizzeria, a dry cleaners and a bakery, between 76th Road and 77th Avenue

“Here we are, it’s a holiday weekend, and 14 people lose their business,” FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard said the day of the fire. . “Sometimes that’s lost in the excitement of the fire. Think about all these business owners, people who work in these stores, and even the impact on the neighborhood, for all these people who shop in these stores, that’s the real tragedy.”

Several days after the fire a shocked man stood behind the construction fence put up around the burned storefronts and looked at the wreckage in disbelief.

“I shopped here before at this bakery” he said Tuesday.“It’s so unbelievable, I feel really bad for the owner. I used to buy bread here.”

Jimmy J. F. has lived in the area for over 40 years. He said the fire was a huge loss to the community.

“It’s the first time anything like this ever happened around here,” he said. “It wiped out 14 stores. It’s an accident no matter how you look at it, but it ruined the community. I’ve lived here 40 years, four generations of my family, so have a lot of people. It sucks, because now you have nothing. It was a good place to come quick to get something from the deli, a quick slice of pizza, you needed a gallon of milk , Everything was convenient. City Councilman Rory I. Lancman (D-Hillcrest),who grew up in the neighborhood, said he intends to do everything possible to help the businesses affected by the fire.

“My heart goes out to the business owners who lost their livelihood in the devastating fire in Kew Gardens Hills, and my thoughts are with the brave first responders who were injured,” he said. “These shops have been staples in the community, and grabbing a slice of pizza after school at PS 164 was a highlight for me then — and for many decades after. Countless memories are intertwined with these businesses and this loss hits home for so many of us. “

He added, “The road ahead will no doubt be a tough one, but my office is working with the New York City Department of Small Business Service to help them connect with the business owners and offer assistance during this tough time.”

Meet Firefighter Gregory Sheperd

FDNY_BlogImages_GregorySheperd_799x419_41317.jpg

Ever since he was a boy attending middle school in Flatbush, Gregory Sheperd knew that he wanted to become one of New York’s Bravest. It was a field trip to Engine Company 249 that first showed him our exciting world of opportunity.

A few years later when he was 13, that excitement became very real when the building he lived in caught fire. The same Firefighters he had met through school came to the scene to help him and his neighbors stay safe.

Today, Gregory is a Firefighter with Engine Company 315. He helps to recruit new candidates for the job, including men and women from his old neighborhood. “Recruiting is important to me,” says Gregory. “It helps educate people about the careers we have here.”

“Quite frankly, I don’t see another career being as rewarding, challenging, fun and leaving such a positive impact on others,” he continues “I just really feel forever indebted to this Department as it has afforded me an option to provide for my family in such a noble way. FDNY is a great job and I’m happy to be working here.”

It’s not too late to go after the career of your dreams at FDNY. Click below to sign up to take this month’s Firefighter Written Exam.

VISIT 2.jpg

On Friday, October 16, FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic 李羅莎 visited Engine 315 and Ladder 125 in Queens to view a forcible entry drill, in which Firefighters demonstrated how they force entry into apartments and homes to search for those trapped by fire. Forcible entry is performed by FDNY units many times a day, and is a firefighting operation that requires close coordination between all team members. Assemblywoman Rozic has donated $20,000 to the FDNY Foundation for the purchase of forcible entry doors for multiple firehouses in Queens.

The FDNY Foundation, the official not-for-profit of the FDNY, funds programs that advance the FDNY’s goals, which include maintaining operational excellence, promoting fire and life safety, and ensuring that firefighters and EMS personnel have the best available training and equipment. If anyone is curious, Fr. Winegar, a medal recipient in 1951, apparently had some influence with his letter.
Fifty promotions to Lieutenant were made on 6/19, nine on 7/9, 153 on 8/11 (including Winegar), and thirteen on 8/13.
The list expired in August and I hope it was exhausted.
