Water tender in front of E 164/L 84 quarters during fall brush season early 1960s. Note officers wearing blue dress uniform hats and 1950s pumpers lined up in background for brush fire response staging area. Korean War Veterans Highway was not built yet (1972) so firehouse was located on "Carlton Avenue" which was then a narrow, 2-way street with little traffic which ran off Huguenot Ave. There was no lot across the street from the firehouse. The water tender above was parked on Ellsworth Ave which made a bend into Carlton Court. Drumgoole Blvd was a 4-lane divided road which traveled from the Outerbridge to the Richmond Ave/Arthur Kill Rd intersection where a famous SI restaurant was located - Al Deppes.
The house directly across from the Ellsworth Ave side of quarters had horses. The house (no longer there) immediately next to the firehouse was owned by a FF who worked in the Huguenot firehouse - "Robbie" Robinson. He was usually the last arrival at work each tour. E 164/L 84 was as quiet a country setting you could find for a NYC firehouse - but was always very active during brush fire seasons each spring and fall. The companies were also 1st or 2nd due to most of SI's South Shore - Tottenville, Charleston, Eltingville, Great Kills, Annadale, Arden Heights, Rossville, etc.
