ENGINE 310/LADDER 174 (CONTINUED)

EAST FLATBUSH

Flatbush was originally chartered as the Dutch Nieuw Nederland colony town of Midwout in 1651. Both names were used in the Dutch era, and Midwood was an alternative name for Flatbush into the early 20th century. Midwood now describes the area immediately south of Brooklyn College. Midwood’s residents predominately feature a mix of Orthodox Jews and Irish Americans.

Flatbush and the five other towns of what was to become Kings County were surrendered to the English in 1664. The influence of Dutch merchant and farming families remained strong in the area until after consolidation into the City of Greater New York in 1898, after which the development of Flatbush as a suburb, and then an integral part of the larger city, proceeded apace.

Before it was incorporated into the City of Brooklyn in 1894, Flatbush described both the Town of Flatbush, incorporating a large swath of central Kings County extending east to the Queens County border, and the Village of Flatbush, formerly the heart of the current community. Many of the remaining early Dutch structures are in the Flatlands and Marine Park neighborhoods.

Ladder 160 was not organized at Snyder Avenue with Engine 310 in 1927.

Ladder 160 was organized in 1984with Engine 326 at 64-02 Springfield Blvd.

Five Ladder Company numbers in Brooklyn and Queens, and two Ladder Company numbers in the Bronx were assigned but never organized through 1972. Beginning in 1984, unused numbers were reassigned to new companies. The organization of Ladder 174 in the location assigned to Ladder 160 is among a few such historical anomalies.

206's old house sat vacant for many years. I can remember going past there in the early 80's and seeing it in a state of disrepair with broken windows and graffiti all over it. Quite a difference from today and the high end real estate in the Bushwick/Williamsburg area.

ENGINE 3/LADDER 12/HIGH RISE 1/BATTALION 7 (CONTINUED)

HISTORY VOLUNTEER ERA PRE-1865

Engine 3 was organized at 417 W. 17th Street in the firehouse of former volunteer Engine 24 "Jackson" built in the early 1860s. Volunteer Engine 24 was organized in 1798 with 30 members at 2 Tryon Row. The company was reorganized in 1836 and moved to 17th Street. The company was mustered out of service in 1865

VOLUNTEER ENGINE 47 HISTORY

"The first, the "Mechanics'" was organized March 10, 1828 for the protection of shipyards. It was located on the dry dock and the members were all shipwrights or builders. On June 22, 1842 it was organized into Hose Company No. 34.

"Their house was a small one, which had a bell on it, and a hole cut in the front door through which the rope attached to the bell could be reached to summon the firemen in case of fire. It was said that of the company that they used to 'grease their wheels with butter,' being too high-toned to use anything more common."

The next Engine No. 47, "Aqueduct", was located on 82nd Street near Third Avenue. It was organized March 6, 1854 and was disbanded September 18, 1855.

The third Engine 47, "New York", organized June 4, 1860 by members of the New York Hose Company No. 5, was housed with them in Firemen's Hall. This company was accused of repeatedly running a competing Hose Company off the road, and was disbanded March 24, 1864.

The last volunteer Engine Company No. 47, the "Croton", was organized on May 26, 1864. They were stationed at 165 W. 20th Street. The company was mustered out by the Paid Department in 1865."
