Engines 159,64,89 In the top 25 of workers during 1948, A rarity for them back in those days. That means one thing; Lots of brush fires that year. Bet if you go back and check the weather reports It was a very dry spring.

3511 - Good points.  Dry seasons can add work to companies which run brush.  But a few SI engine companies were usually in the top 25 engine companies in workers.  E 159 was frequently a top 10 company - in just about every year I checked from the 1940s through 1960 .  E 159 and E 163 were centrally located SI companies, covered a lot of response area and picked up a lot of working fires as 3rd due engines or on multiples.  This continued until 1960 when E 165 and E 166 were organized.  The tremendous volume of fires in the War Years then changed all statistics.

Great sample, MacK. Thanks. My uncle, A former battalion chief, Left me his entire set of WNYF's When he passed on. I used to study the runs/workers lists to determine trends. it didn't change much year to year prior to the 1960's except for the brush fire years, that's when you would see engines 38,62,63,64,81,89 pop up on the list. Van Cortlandt, Bronx, and Pelham Bay Parks. Going to Orchard Beach In the early 1950s There were still farms beyond Eastchester Road in BayChester and Allerton.
Ladder 47, however, always one of the busiest truck companies due to their huge response area. second due from Pelham Parkway to Throggs Neck to Classon point.
I can't comment On Staten Island Other than to notice That in some years Unfamiliar companies would appear on the list.

Rescue 5:

Rescue 5:
Was organized at Engine 155/Ladder 78, 14 Brighton Ave firehouse, in 1948. The apparatus was a 1941 Ward LaFrance hose wagon modified by the shops.  Ladder 78 performed double duty as ladder and rescue.  It was staffed with an officer and 7 firefighters.  Engine 155 had one officer and 6 firefighters for manpower flexibility.

Ladder 78 members would place a blue slip-over front piece when they responded as Rescue 5.  When they responded as the truck, they always left a man back in quarters as the Rescue chauffeur to be able to respond with the Rescue rig to the Ladder 78 fire.  They picked up the Ladder 78 members and responded to the Rescue incident location.  The chief at the original fire was assigned another truck company to replace Ladder 78.  He also had the responsibility to return Ladder 78's rig after the fire.

Chiefs were required to return Ladder 78 to service whenever operating ASAP to be available for Rescue runs.

On multiple alarms, if either Ladder 78 or Rescue 5 was assigned, the Richmond dispatcher also assigned the other unit.  The chief then could put either Ladder 78 to work as as a truck or Rescue 5 as a rescue.

Ladder 78 did not relocate and the dispatcher filled out relocation assignments by special calls.

The open Rescue 5 rig was modified by the members with an enclosed body over the old hose wagon hose bed to protect members and equipment and to better match the other Rescues.

Rescue 5 was disbanded in 1962 after the VN bridge opened.  Rescue 2 covered SI.  They were usually assigned on 3rd alarms, or as needed.

Rescue 5 was reorganized in 1984 at Engine 160 for SI responses.  Rescue 5 would later pick up response into the Brooklyn neighborhoods around the VN bridge (e.g. Bay Ridge, Coney Island)

FDNY Suburban Engines and Suburban Ladders:
"Between September 1st and December 1st, 33 additional engine companies and twelve ladder companies were added to the new Metropolitan Fire Department. In addition, 5 "Suburban Engines" and 3 "Suburban Ladders" were organized. All of these units were established in former volunteer firehouses.

The "suburban" companies operated differently than the regular "full time" paid units. Hoseman and ladderman in the suburban units were paid less than their counterparts in the regular units but they were permitted to work at their former occupations. They had to conform to all other rules and regulations of the new department, were required to sleep in the firehouse, attend all alarms, and be present in quarters two afternoons per month for drills and committee work. The suburban engine companies were equipped with hand drawn pumpers and the suburban ladder companies were equipped with ladder trucks similar to the regular ladder companies except that they were hand drawn.....
The "part-time" system utilized in the suburban companies was found to be ineffective. As the city expanded north, it was recognized that fully paid units would be needed, so, on December 28th (1867), all of the suburban engines and ladders were disbanded and four new engines and three new ladders were established."

"Mack" you have certainly put a lot of work into this thread. I don't know of any other place where any of us could find so much information on the history of the FDNY firehouses. The company patches, the firehouses from Day One, videos of the company, photos of the rigs from past to present.

I think I speak for a great many here saying "Thank You"  and we appreciate what you have done.

Yes most excellent work on documenting so much FDNY History.....Thanks again mack......on a sidenote regarding R*1 for some who may not be aware...the '85 move to ENG*23 was because the W 43 St FH was destroyed in Multiple Alarm Fire that started next door....the ENG*23 move was very shortlived as the qtrs at ENG*34/LAD*21 had more room.... i had covered in R*1 for awhile as LT while they were @ 34.

Rescue 1's firehouse destroyed January 23, 1985: (- as noted by Chief)

'On January 23, 1985, a fire took place in an eight story warehouse adjacent to Rescue 1's quarters on West 43rd Street. There was a heavy fire condition through-out with incredible radiant heat. Without a doubt, this fire is considered one of the most spectacular fires to occur in the City of New York. This fire ultimately reached 10 alarms which is equivalent to two fifth alarm assignments. This is known as a "borough call" response."  from old R 1 website

Rescue 1 was operating at another box and was not in quarters at the time of the fire. Two tower ladders were set up to protect the firehouse from the intense fire condition which was now consuming the entire warehouse. Through the strong efforts of the firefighters, the warehouse eventually collapsed onto the quarters of Rescue 1. The collapse which went through the roof, completely destroyed the firehouse.

The only piece of the firehouse which stood well was the firehouse door. The firehouse door was re-constructed and placed in the back of the new firehouse built at the same location which re-opened On April 29, 1989. This firehouse door is a "main attraction" to fire buffs around the world as well as the story behind it."

Engine 212 quarters:

http://www.slategallery.com/index.php

Engine 212:

"Engine Company No. 12 was organized on Sept.
15, 1869, and since that time has occupied its present quarters on Wythe
Avenue near the corner of North Eighth Street.  The house was built in 1861,
and prior to its occupation by Engine Company No. 12 was tenanted by
"Northern Liberties" No. 5 of the Volunteer Department.  The house, with the
exception of a few small repairs, is in a very comfortable condition.  It is
located in the centre of a district which comprises all the large sugar
refineries, oil works and factories which turn out goods of an inflammable
nature, and make the hottest kind of fire when ignited.  Many of the
buildings are eight ten and twelve stories high, and by reason of their
great altitude,  and the large area of ground covered by some of them, the
firemen meet a difficult task when called upon to battle with a fire in one
of them.  The members of No. 12 know whereof they speak when they say that
they are located in the heart of the worst fire district in Brooklyn, for
they have many times had experiences which confirm their belief.  The company
is equipped with a second-class Amoskeag engine, and a four wheeled tender,
and four kind, young, serviceable horses.  On a first-alarm they cover the
entire territory lying between Kingsland Avenue  on the east and Kent Avenue
on the west, and from the Hunter's Point jute works to South Ninth Street."

In response to the ongoing protest's in the '70s to re open 212..... in 1977 as a "smoke & mirrors" move the city attempted to move R*4 into the qtrs & also have them respond to local boxes w/a Pumper (if they were available)....residents of the "Big Six" multi bldg hi rise complex near R*4s QNS Blvd qtrs immediatly organized a FH blockade consiting of hundreds of residents....the city abandonded that idea before it got off the ground ....their next move was to organize an undermanned Unit w/a Pumper that responded to 212s former boxes & in addition to regular ENG equipment it also carried some dewatering equipment ...it was designated as Utility Unit 1.

I seem to recall a Story about sending a Unit Out on a Run so the City sould then Shut-Down the House while the Members were out - was that E. 212 or some other Company where the City Pulled That Dastardly, Cowardly Act !?!  ???
Thanks Again, Mack & JK

E-232 was falsely relocated if I remember on a super bowl sunday night tour and upon return members were told to clean out lockers unit is closed. This closing is reason we now have a 45 day notice if a unit is on the chopping block.
