Triton Hose Company 23 organized Charles St near Hudson St              1839
Triton Hose Company 23 name changed to Perry Hose Company 23    Unknown
Perry Hose Company 23 moved to new firehouse 48 Horatio St            1847

48 Horatio St former firehouse - current:

No. 23. -- Triton. -- Perry. -- This company first organized under the name of "Triton" on April 1, 1839, and subsequently changed the name to "Perry," in honor of the celebrated Commodore. Two round panels of Perry Hose, illustrating commodore Perry's victory, and which were owned by ex-President King of the Fire Department, were preserved at the Volunteer Firemen's Headquarters. Hose No. 23 was located in Charles Street, near Hudson; after 1847 in Horatio Street, near Hudson, and went out of service in 1865 when the paid Metropolitan Department was established.
(from "Our Firemen - The History of the NY Fire Departments")

Nicknames - volunteer companies in NYC and other cities had distinct nicknames selected by company members for unit identification and morale.  They usually decorated their rigs with correspondiing titles and images:

"Triton" - a mythological Greek god, the messenger of the sea. He is the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, god and goddess of the sea respectively, and is herald for his father. He is usually represented as a merman, having the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish, his shoulders barnacled with sea-shells.  Like his father, Poseidon, he carried a trident. However, Triton's special attribute was a twisted conch shell, on which he blew like a trumpet to calm or raise the waves. Its sound was such a cacophony, that when loudly blown, it put the giants to flight, who imagined it to be the roar of a dark wild beast.

"Perry" - Commodore Matthew C. Perry claimed Key West for US; responsible for modernization of the US Navy in the early 1800s; established curriculum at US Naval Academy; "Father of the Steam Navy" (modernized fleet); commandant of NY Navy yard in 1840s; explorer who visited and "opened" Japan for US in 1850s

Perry Hose Company 23 would be within the current response areas of Squad 18, Engine 3, Ladder 12 and Battalion 7

Some more great stuff, Mack! It's really interesting to hear about the history of some of the pre-1865 volunteer companies that preceded the FDNY. It's amazing that a lot of these historic houses are still standing from that time period.

Mack, would you have a picture of the old E16 quarters on E.25 street? I had one years ago but who knows where it went. That also was a vollie house. Keep up the good work. Can't wait until you get to the Queens houses.

memory master - I will post more complete Engine 16 history.

You're doing great work here, mack.  Do you know if the small structure on the firehouse roof (abutting exposure 2) would have been the hose tower?

manhattan - good question about structure on roof - some additional views:

- appears to be part of original structure

Might be a Bulkhead.

That was the top of the hose tower gentlemen. As you walked into quarters from the street the hose tower roll-up door was just to your left on the apparatus floor.
Thank you so very much Mack, I appreciate your time. Thank you again sir!
