Thanks memory master!

Am I correct in thinking that Engine 8/Ladder 2/Battalion 8 are the only companies in the FDNY to be a part of a commercial High Rise Office building ?

I think Boston also has a similar firehouse used by Rescue 1 (?)

The former location of the Superpumper and the Supertender.

Bill - You are right about Boston.  Engine 10/Tower Ladder 3/Rescue 1/Division 1 are located in 123 High St high rise office building downtown Boston.

FDNY Engine 4, Ladder 15 and Decon. Unit 4 house is located at the base of a high-rise building at 42 South St. near South Street Seaport. I believe this house and FDNY Engine 8, Ladder 2, and Battalion 8 are the only houses built into a high-rise building in the city.

Yes, to answer Willy D's question and to follow up on Mack's post(not to step on anyone's post), Boston FD Engine 10, Tower Ladder 3, Rescue 1, H4(T.S.U. 1), H6(Collapse Rescue 1), J20(Dive Rescue 1), and C6(Division 1) are all located under a high-rise at 125 Purchase St. in Downtown Boston, next door to a Boston EMS Station. I believe the first 2-3 floors of that high-rise are part of this firehouse. It's a really nice house to visit. This firehouse replaced one that was torn down on Oliver Street, right behind the current house, from the '70's and '80's: the quarters of Engine 25, Ladder 8/Tower Unit, Rescue 1, Division 1, Searchlight 1. Engine 25 was disbanded, Ladder 8 was disbanded to form Aerial Tower 1, which in turn became the Tower Unit, which in turn became Tower Ladder 3, which was originally Ladder 3 running with Engine 3 in the South End. Engine 10 and it's Wagon moved in from Mt. Vernon Street on Beacon Hill.

1075k - thanks for the added info.  You never step on my stuff. You make it right or make it better.  Good info about another busy firehouse.  I also think that BFD intended to possibly move their HQ to this location from their Southampton St., Roxbury, site in the 1980s while the "Big Dig" was still in process.

Not a high rise but Engine 211/Ladder 119 in Williamsburg is in a 5 story building.  I believe this firehouse was the first home of the Superpumper.

26 Hooper St. was a former commercial laundry bldg. with 3 bays which were designated for E211, E251 & L119. E251 & L119 were located at 47/48 Washington St. within the Brooklyn Navy Yard and they both moved out Nov. 24, 1941 with E251 going to E211's house at 166 Clymer St. and L119 going to E210's house on Carlton Ave. On May 24, 1944, E211, E251 & L119 all moved into 26 Hooper St.  E251 was disbanded Nov. 1, 1946 then reorganized Oct. 1, 1952 in Queens.

Thanks Gman.  Wasn't the Superpumper and Supertender originally quartered on Hooper St before the firehouse with Engine 207 on Tillary St was completed?

Thanks, Mack! I never knew about the BFD wanting to move their HQ to Downtown.

In reference to the "Big Dig", either what is today the BFD Special Unit H4 or H5 out of this house, also known as "Fort Hill Square", ran as a "Tunnel Rescue Unit" for a while, a 2nd piece to Rescue 1.

E-40/L-35 is in a high-rise residential at 66th and Amsterdam
Sorry guys, forgot about "The Cavemen" of E40/L35 on Amsterdam.

The Super Pumper and Tender were both quartered on Hooper Street (E.210) until the Tillary Street house (E.207) was built.

3511 and the Chief make good point about firehouse decisions made as neighborhoods were being incinerated during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

- The firehouse for Engine 17/Ladder 18 /Bn 4  on Broome St, only 30 years old at the time and still in good condition, was abandoned for new, costly quarters on 25 Pitt St. The Lower East Side was very busy (Alphabet City) then. Squad 5 was planned to occupy the big new firehouse - but never made it - went to the Bronx instead.  The vacated firehouse on Broome St in still standing.

Old Broome St firehouse - (Squad 5 operated from here 1966-1969):

around 1996 the old firehouse was renovated by a movie production  company for a planned TV  show that never got beyond filming the pilot movie. There was a squatter leaving in the firehouse and the production company put him up in a mobil home. they went as far as pots in the kitchen and books and clipboards in the office. They had a weight room and tv room all for nothing.

Pitt St firehouse - 1973 - "E 17/L 18/Squad 5/Bn 4" above doors (E 17 disbanded in 1991; E 15 relocated to Pitt St in 2001)

Firehouse built for 3 companies and BC - Squad 5 operated at 55 E Broadway and then moved to the Bronx in 1974

- Engine 245 / Ladder 161 / Bn 43 had their Coney Island firehouse on W 8th St razed to build a new firehouse in 1971.  The old firehouse had housed 2 engine companies, a truck and the chief effectively.  At a time when Coney Island also became busy, Engine 244 on W 15th St was shut down and money was spent on construction while Coney Island burned down without a 3rd engine.
