Just as a side note, the FF standing by the door is in full dress uniform. Back in the day the house watch had to wear the whole "bag" including the uniform cap. Times have changed,eh.

mm you are correct....years ago it was the Uniform worn by the HW ....in the '60s/'70s it reverted somewhat the coat & hat w/badge were dropped & a small wood plate w/your name & badge number would be affixed to the side of the house watch area while you were doing your 3 hr stint....during non HW tours you wore dungarees & a light blue chambray shirt but for HW you put on a pair of blue chino pants (similar to the work pants of today)  & a Uniform shirt & tie .....today you can't tell the HW apart from any other FF.......when i was on the Fire Patrol for a short while before coming OTJ nobody liked doing HW because on the Patrol the HW was required to stay behind in qtrs during a run & chronicle info from the Dept radio for the Insurance Companies.

  52 E. 114th St. firehouse was a 2 bay station opened July 1, 1904 built for a double Ladder 26 and Water Tower 4. Water Tower 4 was there from day one until March 9, 1957. The 2nd section of Ladder 26 was disbanded on Nov. 1st, 1946 so there was room for E58 to be moved in there in 1948 from their own house at 81 West 115th St. The original 2nd section of Ladder 26 was reorganized on March 11, 1957 right after Water Tower 4 was disbanded and was in service until April 20, 1959. Side note: The 1957-1959 reorganization of L26(2) was because L22's 2nd section had to be taken out of 766 Amsterdam Ave. to make room for Engine 76 and Battalion 11 who were moving in because their firehouse on West 102nd St. was being demolished for a NYCHA Project. BTW, Engine 76's old firehouse was a 2 bay house built for a double E76. That 2nd section was disbanded in 1946.

Yes, 100 Duane Street has three garage bays. The third bay is separated from the other two and formerly housed the Fire Museum.

Also, interesting info on 26's old house. Thanks for sharing guys.

Circa 1948 or thereabouts an underwriter report was recommending consolidation of FDNY firehouses from as few as 52 up to 82 being shuttered for greater efficiency . As it turned out only a very few were enacted evidently E58 being one, E76, L9 and E13 and a few in other boroughs as well.

Gman where did you get that info??  I must be hallucinating  LMAO  I can picture the fh in my head. I used to walk from 58 & 26 to 91 & 43 then get on the Lex subway at 110 St. Maybe just maybe I got them mixed up???

The third Bay and upstairs  on Duane St was the command post for the WTC Rescue and Recovery.

  May of 1944 saw E211, E251 & L119 move to a former commercial laundry bldg. at 26 Hooper St., Feb. 26, 1945 saw E8 go to L2 (2 bay FH at 126 E. 50th St.), Nov. 1, 1946 saw disbandment of L26(2), E91(2) & E283(2). Jan 1, 1947 saw disbandment of E4, E19, E20, E25, E29, E76(2). March 1, 1947- L116 moved from 38-11 Northern Blvd. to E261 @37-20-29th St.; Feb 9, 1948- E214 moved from 231 Herkimer St. to L111 @399 Halsey St.(E214's 1938 Ahrens-Fox didn't fit in FH so they swapped with E222 for 222's 1920's ALF); In Nov. 1948 there was a consolidation of a few firehouses:  E13 from Wooster St. to L20 @155 Mercer St. (house was once home to a double L20). E60 from 352 E. 137th St. to L17 @341 E. 143rd St.(2 bay former double ladder FH). Nov. 22, 1948- L9 moved from 209 Elizabeth St. to Engine 33's big 2 bay FH. June 26, 1949 saw E227 go from 979 Herkimer St. to L123 @423 Ralph Ave. & L110 from 264 State St. to join E207 @365 Jay St.

Relocation of Firehouse in Woodhaven During Renovations Causes Concerns for Residents

A century-old city firehouse is finally being renovated after years of disrepair, but not everyone is happy about what it will take to get the work done. NY1's Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Having an old firehouse just a few doors from their homes has been a source of comfort for many who live on or near 87th Street. Some say it has been a lifesaver.

"I get asthma, and there is times I have to call them, and instead of the truck, they run down the block," said one resident.

"I had a fire. I live on 85th Street. And it was just so great having someone that close," said another.

But that's about to change. The firehouse is set to undergo an extensive 18-month renovation, which will force Engine Company 293 to relocate to a firehouse at 101st street and Jamaica Avenue. The new location is about a half mile away, and that has some residents worried.

"These little houses here that used to be two families, you now have four and five families living here, and for that reason alone, you really need something quite close," said one resident..

Responding to the concerns, the Fire Department says that during the renovation, the neighborhood will be covered by other fire companies in addition to Engine Company 293, a redundancy that should reduce the impact of the closure.

The local councilman, Eric Ulrich, is also trying to calm fears about the move and rumors that this is a permanent closure.

"The fire department has assured me that the response times will not be severely impacted, but that also the fire engine company will be returning back to the firehouse when construction is completed," Ulrich said.

The city tried to close Engine Company 293 several years ago, but residents fought the plan and won. This time around, it's the structure that needs saving.

E 293s quarters was recently being worked on with the front and side of there quarters with scaffolding in front and side of quarters. 

Chief is there actually a date set for the move ?    Why l ask is that the quarters of E 285 & TL 142 were due to start upon completion of E 286 & TL 135s quarters. ... E 285 was going to E 331 and TL 142 was going to E 293...Once this construction was completed then E 293 was going to E 294 & H&L 143s quarters. ....Thanks Boss

That's what i was wondering as far as FH renovation's recently  planned as you said 142 was supposed to go to 293 &  285 to 331 ? but now it seem's another scenario is in place .

SOME OLD & NEW PROPOSED FH HISTORY....Back before 173 was organized & before 107 moved from New Jersey Ave to Lincoln Ave 143 was 2nd Due all the the way South on Crossbay Blvd to the North Channel Bridge & the side streets along the way ..... back before the "new" side of Howard Beach (West of Crossbay Blvd was built up there in the mid '60s there were several old factories & large mostly abandoned farm houses there.. some accessed only by dirt roads....143 in Winter had some long cold runs down Crossbay w/a wooden Aerial back in the late '50s / early '60s responding from Jamaica Ave & 101 St down to 165 Ave......also 107 when still on New Jersey Ave in the same era responded 2nd due from New Jersey & Jamaica Aves all the way down to the Belt Parkway before 103-2 was organized (except in the '60s during 1800 to 2400 hr nightly periods when either LAD*15 or mostly LAD*10 was relocated as LAD*193 a Second Section of 103.....also not necessarily to do w/long Runs but also for a period ENG*10 would be relocated nightly to ENG*225 in the old Qtrs on Liberty Ave & Ashford St as a Second Section of 225 (before 332 was organized there).....when the FH on Lincoln Ave & Linden Blvd was being planned it had been decided to move 107 & 225 there to provide more coverage to the built up "new" side of Howard Beach West of Crossbay Blvd as well as the newly built Starret City but what happened in the interim was that the Fire Storm began to sweep East NY York so the Job decided to in addition to manning the Lincoln Av FH w.225/107 & originally BN*29 (who had been the 2nd Section of BN*39 at 236 later only 1 BN remained called the 39).....Members from 225 & 107 were given the option of staying in their old FH's or moving to the new FH .....if i remember only half of 107 moved to Lincoln Av & the other half stayed as 175 but all of 225 went to Lincoln Ave & 332 was Organized w/all new Members on Liberty Ave.... i never really understood why they did not keep the Company Numbers the same in the old FHs & making the numbers 332/175 on Lincoln Ave ? possibly because of the numbers used in the budget proposals ?.....also at one point 2 other new FHs were planned for the ENY/B'Ville but never were built one for 225/236/BN*39 on Liberty between both old FHs & another was for 231/232/120/BN*44 on the North side of Atlantic Ave by the LIRR ENY Station kind of opposite Sheffield Ave.....also at the same time a new FH for 218 & 237 together (i forget exactly where) i dont know why they were never built this info on these supposed new FHs was published in a WNYF "What's New" section in the late '60s? (so it is not just an imaginary rumor).

there were many other double engine proposals: 204 and 226; 215 and 238,22 and 44 actually built with that plan but not enacted; eng 5 and ladd 3 nver built; 41 and 71 never realized; maybe others too....
