I realize a small sample size, but it seems pretty evenly distributed.

Question: Division 13: It appears from pictures I see from fires and the rundowns that it's very much single family/two family dwellings on small lots (2 to 3 stories), rows of stores 1 to 2 story, & JFK right in the middle. Is that a fair summation of Division 13? Never had the pleasure of traversing the area!

7 multiples for the whole month of July. Back in the 70's that could have been any night before midnight especially around the 4th. How times changed

"EdMc", how Right you are.

Even if we had the internet, this web site, and online listening, during those very busy FDNY War Years, most likely it would be just about impossible to list the rundowns of work back then. Because there was just SO MUCH OF IT.

Thinking back then, if we were able to follow the action "City Wide", maybe on a SLOW month we would get a reading like July, 2021, 143 Total Working Fires. Only that number would represent Multiple Alarms (not working fires) for a very slow month.

Of course that would NOT count the huge number of 10-75s requiring a 3 and 2 response, OR the many signal 10-30s getting 2 and 2, trying to keep that third engine free for other work.

What a time it was for the guys on the job and those GREAT FDNY Dispatchers who somehow, kept track of companies without any use of computers.

I would also add what "TA176" posted in the thread "Engine 220 Ladder 122 Back to Back" (comment number 23), "Apparatus Section".

In the 1970's, a 10-30 transmitted by a responding company indicated a "working fire". Usually the first arriving unit would transmit a 10-30 if they had a worker, similar to transmitting a 10-20 if there was no apparent activity at the box.

There may or may not have been any additional units assigned with the 10-30 was signal. A company that might have been special called to a box would transmit a 10-30 if they had a working fire and additional units would be sent, depending upon conditions and availability. Sometimes a 10-30 had a 2&2 response, sometimes a 3&2 response, sometimes additional units, sometimes a rescue. Usually 1 BC would handle the incident.

A 10-75 transmitted was a request for a full first alarm assignment, usually by the first arriving unit or BC. This usually indicated a working fire or incident and a requirement for additional units. A 10-75 could have followed an initial 10-30, or could have been transmitted as the first signal for a box. A 10-75 signal often preceded an "all-hands" or a 2nd alarm.

The 10-30 signal became obsolete and discontinued in the field.

When a 10-20 signal was transmitted for a box, if was usually followed by a 10-92, Malicious False Alarm. There were so many 10-92s, even for boxes with high fire activity. Kids loved to pull boxes and were rarely caught or punished for false alarms. If you had 10 runs between 3 PM and midnight, 5 or 6 could be 10-92s. Some boxes were famous for MFAs and could almost be predicted following the end of a school day.

Companies not at the box location would continue in at a decreased speed. Some 10-20s did become 10-18s or 10-19s for minor incidents.
