FDNY Pumpers awarded to KME

Is that a towline through the eye hooks on the front bumper?  I've never seen a company ready to be towed like that before!

If that is a kme joke it is a good one otherwise it is a small diameter hose for rubbish Fires.

As 68 says, it's a reconnected length for bubish.  It's usually a piece cut from an old booster reel line, no nozzle.  We just feed it through those tow eyes to keep it in place.

so they can quickly, easily fill the dumpster/container with water eliminating the need overhaul.

Hi,  so 165  will remain engine with squad body...  why did they stay engine co. ?    will future rearmounts  have  the latest style light racks ?

Probobly because the city is too cheap to pay another company 12%....

What's a light rack?

.....and you're probably in the wrong forum.

It wasn't a joke about KME, that's certainly what it looked like and I didn't know that FDNY even knew what a booster line was!  Now that I know what it is it certainly makes sense.  Actually I'm quite glad to see that the new KME engines are working out well, it's a welcome relief compared to what the Ferrara ladders were like when they 1st went in service.

The ALF engines from thirty years ago had booster reels.  A lot of companies cut off a few feet with a coupling for this purpose.

As for the KME working out, cant reall say yet.  Theres like 3 in service.....well see ove r the next few months.  Let them get out through the cold months.

Booster lines on a reel were discontinued on FDNY ENG's starting w/the '87 Macks....the Booster tank (500 gal) still remains......my comments from a different thread....  ......the thinking for eliminating the Booster line & reel was that 2 FDNY FFs were killed by cars while rewinding booster hose(RIP FFs Kennehan 228 & FF Shands 297).....these were unfortunate incidents but instead of speedily rewinding booster hose onto the reel at the rear you now have to disconnect & drain hose at the front of the rig which is more time consuming & could be just as dangerous....in 332 we had many car & rubbish fires at the time  & could wear out a length of 1 3/4 in about a month....i never remember a length of booster hose wearing out.....when i sent a report concerning the lack of booster hose/reel  & the rapid wearing out of 1 3/4 they sent us 10 lengths of 1 3/4 & said use all you want.

The rubber hose line on many Pumpers is sometime only a piece of garden hose used for extremly small rubbish Fires....a dumpster requires more water plus a dumpster door is not watertight & could not be filled w/water.....even if possible this would be a bad practice to just fill it w/out examining the contents (bodies have been found in such situations).

We just got the schedule dates for the KME  training at the rock.....It is this month and the beginning of September........Since our neighboring company 286 is scheduled to get the last of the 2002s to be replaced and we have the first 2003, they should alternate Saturday and Sunday between us .............Should be great to get a new LONE WOLF rig....

The KME contract was for 91 pumpers in 3 years, we are into the 3rd year of this contract and by the time all 91 are delivered some front line pieces will be 15 years old.

Did New York City extend KME's contract for an additional 3 years, or does anyone even know?

The contract between the FDNY and KME is indeed a 3 year contract for 91 pumpers. The contract is not even a year old yet. The first 5 or 6 pumpers were under the 2014 fiscal budget and classified as 2014 pumpers.  Now starting with E 70 the new 2015 fiscal budget is in effect. E 70s new KME is Reg # 15001and E 259 is KP 15006 and KP 15007 being worked on. It doesnt appear that the rigs are being replaced as was in the past by there Reg #s. I would have to believe that E 71, 83, 220 are somewhere between E 70 and E 259s Reg #s..

KME has stated  that they will be able to  deliver 4 pumpers per month....I will agree that it did not look like they were able to perform this task, but now it seems like they are on track with there agreement.

The contract was awarded in 2012 I believe and it took KME almost 2 years to produce the first rig.
