What is the actual size of the piece ?
Maltese width 3 3/4"
Maltese height 3 1/2"
Bottom tab 1 1/4" that is the bottom part where the screw is thru the opening so the entire height is 4 3/4 "

The only ones I ever saw were FD on the top and NY on the bottom with the car # in the center.

The ones used "back in the day" were 8 1/2 X 8 1/2. F.D. on top and N.Y. on the bottom. The center (4" diameter) held the car number. They were cast aluminum.

What kind of cars would use them? Chief cars and the like?

Back awhile Cars basically had the cast Maltese Cross Plaque painted white with red numbers & also some Rigs had one (the Commissioner had chrome trim around the edges on his ) ....they have long since been replaced earlier on Cars & SUVs by a license plate sized piece of masonite & today it is a piece of plastic with a red background with a small stick on Maltese cross & stick on Registry number......if any of the original cast Plaques are found they will be expensive .

^^^^^^^ here is one of the old Maltese Cross's on a Dodge Wagon BN Rig....1664411246876.png..they had nubs or protrusions cast into the back that were threaded to accept a bolt used to mount it on a shop made "T" shaped steel strap ...early ones had the number painted in the circle later ones had stick on numbers ... everything within the circle was interchangeable only the designs in the outer wings were cast ......big bosses like the FC's Car 1 had an address type number screwed in the circle
