IF they are getting 4 new Field Comm Units, that still makes them about $850,000 per copy.
They better be pretty special for that price!

Perhaps in addition the electronic firefighter accountability equipment, maybe they also have video streaming capabilities to the command center at Metrotech.  850K is pretty pricey considering a new RM is just over a million bucks.

Some people question 'why 4 FCUs?'  IF they contain the new electronic FF tracking equip. maybe the brass wants them be on the scene of working fires/serious incidents quickly, and hopefully before a Mayday is called.  In which case, I could see one in each borough's.... of course S.I. is always the red-headed step-child and doesnt get one!  Just some speculation on my part.

I can't see what they could possibly do with 4 units, unless they have 2 and 2 spares?  there just isn't the run activity to justify 4 units.
Normal run activity may not justify 4 Feld Comms (if their mission remains the same) on a regular basis.  However increasing the number of Field Com Units may be related to so much focus on preparation for terrorist acts and natural disasters.  Or perhaps the mission of Field Comm Units is increasing in scope.

That's a really strange looking truck.  The cab is as big as the back portion making it look like they took an old engine company cab and put a new box on the back.  I really that's not the case but that's certainly what it looks like.  I wonder why they wanted such a big cab area on the truck, it's not as if it ever responds with a full crew.

Why do they cover up the logos?

They cover up all FDNY related logos/lettering when they are transporting the unit. They did it with the engines and ladders also.  Maybe because the FDNY has not taken delivery of it yet.

Some of these Rigs are driven through other States so i would think the FDNY would not want a non FDNY employee tooling around w/the logo's on.

I've been told in the past that there are liability issues also.
While that's possible I'm more inclined to believe it's just a FDNY thing.  Most of the departments have their trucks delivered from the manufacturer fully lettered and don't bother covering up anything during the transit to the department.  As a matter of fact many of them like to have it seen as a matter of pride.

Staffing on Field Comm is 1 Fire Officer and at least 1 Fire Alarm Dispatcher. Normal would be Officer, and 2 Dispatchers. 1 Dispatcher at the command board and 1 in the rig. If there is a extra Battalion chief surplus they may ride with field comm for the tour.

The larger cab is pretty much a tiller cab with a box mounted on the back. It serves a few purposes, safer riding positions, more remove in back by removing door and stairs from box. Also parts are the same as the rest of the fleet, so quicker repairs to the cab.
