Although not a skyscraper, Engine 211 and Ladder 119 moved into this converted factory building during World War II. This firehouse was also the first home of the Super Pumper and Super Tender.

I find that very hard to believe …so then why a new engine company going to Rescues’ fire house on 43rd St when they move out ?
Rumor is that is no longer happening and R*1's quarters will be used for something else.

Hudson Yards seems to be alot like WTC (atleast in the early years) lots of vacant square footage. I'm sure the Covid work from home did it no favors commercially. Also residentially, like many skyscrapers down town I wouldn't be surprised if alot of it is vacant and being used as assets for large corporations.

From what I've heard from former members, that building was once a commercial laundry prior to becoming a firehouse. Any truth to that?

👆👆. Bingo ….winner winner ……!
Don't forget the pandemic put a sizable cut into a lot of the midtown companies EMS calls and run volume. If the people ain't there, cause they ain't in the offices, then the numbers go down.

For a very brief time, early1960 to November 1961, 40/35 were also located in what appeared to be an old garage on Amsterdam Avenue, adjacent to what would be their new quarters while it was under construction. As a freshman at Power Memorial Academy in the fall of 1961 I would jog past both buildings on my way to track practice in the park at 72nd St. next to the Hudson River. The garage was then torn down after the new firehouse opened.
E40 was originally up on W68th St. but moved in with L35 on W63rd St. when the second section of the ladder company was disbanded in the nine-teens. That abandoned house was visible from Power’s classroom windows before the entire block was razed for Lincoln Center.

I believe that 40's old quarters on W.68 street was right by the old 20th Precinct station house which is now on W.82 street.
