Usually when I walk my dog, I take her to firehouses. Thankfully due to being in Brooklyn there are a lot within walking distance. Recently I noticed both E*248's and E*250's firehouses are lettered for trucks. Anyone have an idea what companies they were or were supposed to be.

L113 Was At E248 For A Little Bit.. Mid 90's I Believe.

L147 Was At E250 Also For Around 2 Years.. Mid 70's.

I believe it was L 57 (or maybe 60) to go in with E72. Never organized.

L50 to go in with E42. You could still see the silhouette of the brass numbers above the bay door back in the 1950s. L50 organized 15 years later on Bruckner Boulevard with E89.

Ls 27 and 47 built as a completely separate houses some years after E46 and 64, respectlvely, and numbered accordingly. L27 flush with 46, 47 stood alone but connected to 64 by a common kitchen and a small courtyard.

L49 occupied its own quarters on Nelson Avenue, back to back with E68 from 1913 until 1947 when it was moved in with 68. Though empty, the house was still marked as L49 in the 1950s.

L36 originally organized and in service with engine 43 circa 1908 to 1914, then it moved over to Inwood when E95 organized. It remained vacant for over a half century (except for a spare ladder truck) but the brass numbers were still over the North Bay in the 1950s. When L59 moved over from Boston Road to Sedgwick Avenue the number 3 was bent to form a 5 and the number 6 flipped upside down so now 36 read 59, or so the story goes. Haven't been there in a while so don't know what it looks like now.

E96 originally organized in a Walker house with L19 in the late 1920s. After just a few years L19 moved in with original E50 quarters from the 1880s. E96 house still numbered for L19 I believe until it was torn down in the mid-60s.

Several Bronx firehouses (e.g., Es 62, 75 original, 79, 82, 83 ) not numbered for their partner ladder company for decades since the house predated them. Only recently has that been corrected.

E-206’s old house was originally going to have L-133 and the house on Sheffield Ave was supposed to be for E-296 and L-145, but ended up with 290 and 103 moved over from downtown Brooklyn. 310’s house on Snyder Ave was supposed to have L-160. E-222’s new house on Ralph Ave was supposed to get 112, but they stayed in Bushwick.

I was a fireman in, the Lower East Side, "Fort Pitt" Tower Ladder 18 in the 1970s & Early 1980s. In quarters with us at that time was Engine 17 and then as, now the 4th Battalion. Above the doors clearly marked was "Squad 5" Which Never was quartered on Pitt. St., and Squad 5, was closed in I think in 1975. Now Engine 17 was closed and now Engine 15 formerly in their own firehouse on Henry St. is now in Pitt St. along with TL-18 and Batt. 4. During the 1970s and early 1980s all these units were very busy, well of 6,000 alarms per year, and a lot of structural fires. One thing was for sure we often ran out of available units on the Lower East Side. A Squad would have been helpful. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26

Five planned Ladders that have not been organized remain:

Ladder 57, planned for E72 in The Bronx.
Ladder 60, planned for E45, pre-empted by Ladder 58
Ladder 139, planned for E289 quarters, pre-empted by Ladder 138, which was planned for E288.
Ladder 141, planned for E292 quarters, which was originally planned as E290.
Ladder 145, planned for E296 quarters, which was originally where E290 is now.

Ladder 171 is the only Ladder currently disbanded.

I also forgot E97's Walker House, built to include L32. There was really no need for an aerial ladder in Pelham Gardens so L32 moved back in with E62 after just a few years. But 97s house remained numbered for L32 at least through the 1960s.

Engines that never hosted a Ladder in their quarters or moved into what was originally a Truck house.
2, 11, 12, 14, 19, 20, 27, 41, 44, 56, 65, 152, 154, 203, 204, 212, 213, 215, 217, 224, 226, 228, 235, 236, 237, 252, 262, 269, 274, 278, 296, 314, 316
51, 57, 77, 78, 86, 87, 223 were Fireboats

Just a thought
With the boom happening in East Harlem and the expected 2nd ave subway, do you think FDNY would add a ladder company to Eng 91.
Ladder 43 moved in with Engine 53 and recently Eng 36 was disbanded.

I'm not sure if 21 years ago can still be considered recently.

Also with the gentrification going on in the neighborhood, I wouldn't be surprised if fire duty continues to drop in the area even if the population raises.
