Los Angeles Brush Fire 1/7/25

A little bit about the financial and insurance side of this calamity. The responsibility of this disaster lies in the lap of Gavin Newsom and Ricardo Lara who happens to be the commissioner of Insurance for the state of California. For the past 8 years the top 20 companies doing business in the state have filed for rate adjustments to make sure they had adequate resources to pay current claims and to establish reserves for the pending wildfire claims. It is not a matter of if but when regarding the fire exposure. Many areas have a greater exposure than others and the companies needed rate adequacy for the exposure. Fast forward to 2024 and many of the top 20 companies had either stopped writing new business or pulled out of the state altogether. This action shifted the risk to the companies that remained. State Farm asked for a 24% rate increase to continue writing fire insurance in the state. Commissioner Lara denied the increase. State Farm then started the non renewal process for homes in the high risk area and also stopped writing new business. Two more companies pulled out of the state and Lara still refused. Simply put, the premiums didn't match the exposure. The commissioner pulled a power play and it screwed the citizens of California. The average value of the homes in Pacific Palisades was around 10 million, then add 75% (7.5m) for contents and 50% for additional living expenses. Multiply that by 5000 which is the number destroyed just in Palisades. Yep, the state is run by idiots. Don't get me started on the mayor and Fire Chief!

As off this morning, death toll has been increased to 10 People. The Palisades fire is now over 20,000 Acres and is only 6% contained. The National Guard has been deployed to assist with the Eaton Fire, which is now 13,690 Acres. The Kenneth Fire in West Hills is over 1,000 Acres and is 35% contained. The Hurst Fire is 37% contained, the Lidia Fire in Acton is less then 500 Acres, and is 75% contained.

The City of Pasedana has announced that they are NO longer taking donations, saying they are overwhelmed. A fixed winged aircraft from Quebec was involved in a drone strike with a drone not assigned to the Pallisades Fire. Quebec 1, the Aircraft involved returned to Van Nuys without farther incident.

The LAPD has advised that they are investigating a possible arson suspect related to the Kenneth Fire, residents called 911 advising that they overheard a male saying he was "trying to light a fire." He was taken into custody.

Fire crews are deploying from more than a thousand miles away to these fires. This Facebook video shows at least three engine companies from northern Idaho leaving for California. Coeur d'Alene is 1,239 miles from Malibu. It won't allow me to post the entire video, but here's a screen shot.

Don't get me started on the Mayor, she cut the LAFD budget by 17.2 Million (2%), then increased the LAPD Budget by 125.9 Million (7%)

That wasn't a helicopter that hit a drone. It was a fixed wing asset. The "super scooper" is designed to refill their water tanks by basically landing on a body of water and picking up water before taking off again. They're owned by the Quebec government, hence their callsign.

The Super Scooper
From Wikipedia:
Introduced during 1966, the CL-215 was the first aircraft specifically designed to be a water bomber. A total of 125 aircraft were constructed prior to the final CL-215 being delivered during May 1990.

What are the 400 series engines in L.A. City ? (E. 473, E. 496 etc.)

I saw a report yesterday I think, where they were saying that the FD budget actually increased because the ff union was still negotiating at the beginning of the budget year but finalized after the fact. At that point the budget went up to negotiated raises etc.

HOWEVER
The telling numbers come from reading between the lines. What's the budget for repair, replacement, overtime, New vehicle acquisition, building uogrades........ compared to the last 5 years for example. Those are the numbers among others that tell the true story.
They have been closing companies since 2008. Task Force houses cut to engine company only or Light Force only. Systematic reduction of service while the volume of calls for service increase.

What are the 400 series engines in L.A. City ? (E. 473, E. 496 etc.)
400 series are reserve engines. 200's are active companies that have one driver and are attached to truck companies to create the light force or add an engine to create a task force. The 200's they will add officer and two firefighters to beef up resources.
